Deuteronomy 9

4 God doeth them not good for their owne righteoufnes, but for his owne fake 7 Moſes putteth them in remem brance of their finnes 17 The two tables are broken. 26 Moſes prayeth for the people.
1.HEare ô Iſraél, Thou ſhalt paſſe ouer Iordén this day, to go in & a to poſſeſſe nacions greater & mightier then thy ſelfe, cities great & walled vp to heauen,
2.A people great and tall, euen the children of the Anakims, whome thou knoweſt, and of whome thou haſt b heard ſay, Who can ſtand before the children of Anák?
3.Vnderſtand therefore that this day the Lord thy God is he which c goeth ouer before thee as a conſuming fire: he ſhal deſtroy them, and he ſhal bring them downe before thy face: ſo thou ſhalt caſt thē out and deſtroy them ſodenly, as ye Lord hathe ſaid vnto thee.
4.Speake not thou in thine heart (after that the Lord thy God hath caſt them out before thee) ſaying, For my d righteouſnes ye Lord hathe broght me in, to poſſeſſe this land: but for ye wickednes of theſe nacions the Lord hathe caſt them out before thee.
5.For thou entreſt not to inherit their land for thy righteouſnes, or for thy vpright heart, but for the wickednes of thoſe natiós, the Lord thy God doeth caſt thē out before thee, and that he might perfourme the worde which the Lord thy God ſware vnto thy fathers, Abrahám, Izhák, and Iaakób.
6.Vnderſtand therefore, that the Lord thy God giueth thee not this good land to poſſeſſe it for thy righteoufnes: for thou art a e ſtifnecked people.
7.f Remember, & forget not, how yu prouokedſt the Lord thy God to angre in the wildernes: ſince the day that thou dideſt depart out of the land of Egypt, vntil ye came vnto this place ye haue rebelled againſt the Lord.
8.Alſo in Horéb ye prouoked the Lord to angre ſo that ye Lord was wroth with you, euen to deſtroy you.
9.When I was gone vp in to the mount, to receiue the tables of ſtone, the tables, I ſay, of ye couenāt, which the Lord made with you: and * I abode in the moūt forty dayes and fortie nightes, & I nether ate bread nor yet dranke water:
10.* Then the Lord deliuered me two tables of ſtone, written with the finger of God, g and in them was conteined according to all the wordes which the Lord had ſaid vnto you in the mounte out of the middes of the fire, in the day of the aſſemblie.
11.And when the fortie dayes and fortie nightes were ended, the Lord gaue me the two tables of ſtone, the tables, I ſay, of the coue-
12.And the Lord ſaid vnto me, * Ariſe, get thee downe quickly from hence: for thy people which thou haſt broght out of Egypt, haue h corrupt their wayes: thei are ſone turned out of the way, which I commanded them: thei haue made thẽ a molten image.
13.Furthermore, the Lord ſpake vnto me, ſaying, I haue ſene this people, and beholde, it is a ſtifnecked people.
14.i Let me alone, that I may deſtroye thẽ, and put out their name from vnder heauẽ, and I wil make of thee a mightie nacion, and greater then thei be.
15.So I returned, and came downe from the Mount (& the Mount burnt with fire, and the two Tables of the couenãt were in my two hands)
16.Then I loked, & beholde, ye had ſinned againſt the Lord your God: for ye had made you a moltẽ calf, and had turned quickly out of the k way which the Lord had commanded you.
17.Therefore I toke the two Tables, & caſt them out of my two hands, and brake thẽ before your eies.
18.And I fel downe before the Lord, fortie daies, and fortie nights, as before: I nether ate bread nor dranke water, becauſe of all your ſinnes, which ye had committed, in doing wickedly in the ſight of yͤ Lord, in that ye prouoked him vnto wrath.
19.(For I was afraied of the wrath and indignacion, wherewith the Lord was moued againſt you, euen to deſtroye you) yet the Lord heard me at that time alſo.
20.Likewiſe the Lord was verie angry with Aarón, euen to l deſtroye him: but at that time I praied alſo for Aarón.
21.And I toke your ſinne, I meane the calfe which ye had made, and burnt him with fire, and ſtamped him and grounde him ſmale, euen vnto verie duſt: and I caſt the duſt thereof into the riuer, that deſcended out of the m Mount.
22.Alſo * in Taberáh, and in * Maſſáh * and in Kibrothhattaauáh ye prouoked yͤ Lord to angre.
23.Likewiſe when the Lord ſent you from Kadeſh-barnéa, ſaying, Go vp, and poſſeſſe the land which I haue giuen you, thẽ ye n rebelled againſt the commandemẽt of the Lord your God, and beleued him not, nor hearkened vnto his voyce.
24.Ye haue bene rebellious vnto the Lord, ſince the daie that I knewe you.
25.Then I fel downe before the Lord o fortie daies and fortie nights, as I fel downe before, becauſe the Lord had ſaid, that he wolde deſtroye you.
26.And I praied vnto the Lord, and ſaid, O Lord God, deſtroye not thy people & thine inheritance, which thou haſt redemed through thy greatnes whome yͤ haſt broght out of Egypt by a mightie hand.
27.p Remember thy ſeruants Abrahám, Izhák, and Iaakób: loke not to the ſtuburnes of this people, nor to their wickednes, nor to their ſinne,
28.Leſt the countrey, whence thou broghteſt them, ſay, * Becauſe the Lord was not able to bring them into the land which he promiſed them, or becauſe he hated them, he caried them out, to ſlaye them in the wildernes.
29.Yet thei are thy people, and thine inheritance, which thou broghteſt out by thy mightie power, and by thy ſtretched out arme.
