Deuteronomy 4

An exhortacion to obſerue the Lawe without adding thereto or diminiſhing. 6 Therein ſtandeth our wiſdome. 9 We muſt teache it to our children 15 No image oght to be made to worſhip. 26 Threatenings againſt them that forſake the Law of God. 37 God choſe the ſede becauſe he loued their fathers. 43 The thre cities of refuge.
.NOw therefore hearken, ô Iſraél, vnto the ordinances and to the lawes ŵ I teache you to a do, that ye may liue and go in, & poſſeſſe the land, which the Lord God of your fathers giueth you.
.Ye ſhal b put nothing vnto the worde which I commande you, nether ſhal ye take c oght there from, that ye may kepe the commandements of the Lord your God which I commande you.
.Your d eyes haue ſene what the Lord did becauſe of Baal-Peór: for all the men that followed Baal-Peór, the Lord thy God hathe deſtroyed euerie one frō amōg you.
.But ye that did e cleaue vnto ye Lord your God, are aliue euerie one of you this day.
.Beholde, I haue taught you ordinances, and lawes, as the Lord my God commanded me, that ye ſhulde do euen ſo with in the land whither ye go to poſſeſſe it.
.Kepe them therefore, and do them: for that is your f wiſdome, and your vnderſtanding in the ſight of the people, which ſhal heare all theſe ordinances, and ſhal ſay, " Onely this people is wiſe, and of vnderſtanding and a great nacion.
.For what nacion is ſo great, vnto whome the gods come ſo nere vnto them, as the Lord our God is g nere vnto vs, in all that we call vnto him for?
.And what nacion is ſo great, that hathe ordināces and lawes ſo righteous, as all this Lawe, which I ſet before you this day?
.But take hede to thy ſelfe, and h kepe thy ſoule diligently, that thou forget not the things which thine eyes haue ſene, & that they departe not out of thine heart, all the daies of thy life: but teache the thy ſonnes, and thy ſonnes ſonnes:
.Forget not the day that thou ſtodeſt before the Lord thy God in Horéb, when ye Lord ſaid vnto me, Gather me the people together, and I wil cauſe them heare my wordes, that they may learne to feare me all the dayes that they ſhal liue vpon the earth, and that they may teache their children:
.Then i came you nere & ſtode vnder the mountaine & the mountaine * burnt with fire vnto the middes of heauen, and there was darcknes, cloudes and miſt.
.And the Lord ſpake vnto you out of the middes of the fire, and ye heard the voyce of the wordes, but ſawe no ſimilitude, ſaue a voyce.
.Then he declared vnto you his couenant which he commanded you to k do, euen the ten commandements, and wrote them vpon two tables of ſtone.
.¶ And the Lord commanded me that ſame time, that I ſhulde teache you ordināces and lawes, which ye ſhulde obſerue in the land, whither ye go, to poſſeſſe it.
.Take therefore good hede vnto your " ſelues: for ye ſawe no l image in the day that the Lord ſpake vnto you in Horéb out of the middes of the fire:
.That ye corrupt not your ſelues, & make you a grauen image or repreſentacion of anie figure: whether it be the likenes of male or female,
.The likenes of anie beaſt that is on earth or the likenes of anie fethered foule that flieth in the aire:
.Or the likenes of anie thing that crepeth on the earth, or the likenes of anie fiſh that is in the waters beneath the earth,
.And leſt thou lift vp thine eyes vnto heauen, and when thou ſeeſt the ſunne and the moone and the ſtarres with all the hoſte of heauen, ſhuldeſt be driuen to worſhip them and ſerue them, which the Lord thy God hathe m diſtributed to all people vnder the whole heauen.
.But the Lord hathe také you and broght you out of the n yron fornace: out of Egypt to be vnto him a people and inheritance, as appeareth this day.
.And the Lord was angry with me for your wordes, and ſware that I ſhulde not go ouer Iordén, & that I ſhulde not go in vnto that good land, which the Lord thy God giueth thee for an inheritance.
.For I muſt dye in this land, and ſhal not go ouer Iordén: but o ye ſhal go ouer, and poſſeſſe that good land.
.Take hede vnto your ſelues, leſt ye forget the couenant of the Lord your God ŵ he made with you, & leſt ye make you anie grauen image, or likenes of anie thing, as
.For the Lord thy God is a p conſuming fire, and a ielous God.
.¶ When thou ſhalt beget children and childrens children, and ſhalt haue remained long in the land, if ye q corrupt your ſelues, and make anie grauen image, or likenés of anie thing, and worke euil in the ſight of the Lord thy God, to prouoke him to angre,
.I r call heauen and earth to recorde againſt you this day, that ye ſhal ſhortely periſh from the land, whereûto ye go ouer Iordén to poſſeſſe it: ye ſhal not prolong your daies therein, but ſhal vtterly be deſtroyed.
.And the Lord ſhal [ſ] ſcatter you among the people, & ye ſhalbe left fewe in nomber among the nacions, whether the Lord ſhal bring you:
.And there ye ſhal ſerue gods, euen the worke of mans hand, wood, & ſtone, which nether ſe, nor heare, nor eat, nor ſmel.
.But if from thence thou ſhalt ſeke the Lord thy God, thou ſhalt finde him, if thou ſeke him with all thine t heart, and with all thy ſoule.
.When thou art in tribulacion, and all theſe things are come vpon thee, " at the length, if thou returne to the Lord thy God, and be obedient vnto his voyce,
.(For the Lord thy God is a merciful God) he wil not forſake thee, nether deſtroye thee nor forget the couenant of thy fathers, which he u ſware vnto them.
.For inquire now of the daies yͤ are paſt, which were before thee, ſince the day that God created man vpon the earth, and x aſke from the one end of heaué vnto the other, if there came to paſſe ſuche a great thing as this, or whether anie ſuche like thing hathe bene heard.
.Did euer people heare yͤ voyce of God ſpeakĩg out of the middes of a fire, as thou haſt heard, and liued?
.Or hathe God aſſayed to go & take him a nacion from among nacions, by y tentacions, by ſignes, and by wonders, and by warre, and by a mighty hand, & by a ſtretched out arme, and by great feare, accórding vnto all that the Lord your God did vnto you in Egypt before your eyes?
.Vnto thee it was ſhewed, that thou mighteſt z knowe, that the Lord he is God, and that there is none but he alone.
.Out of heaué he made thee heare his voice to inſtruct thee, & vpó earth he ſhewed thee his great fire, and thou heardeſt his voyce out of the middes of the fire.
.And becauſe a he loued thy fathers, therefore he choſe their ſede after them, and hathe broght thee out of Egypt in his ſight, by his mighty power,
.To thruſt out nacions greater and mightier thé thou, before thee, to bring thee in, and to giue thee their land for inheritance: as appeareth this day.
.Vnderſtand therefore this day, and conſider in thine heart, that yͤ Lord, he is God in heauen aboue, and vpon the earth beneth: there is none other.
.Thou ſhalt kepe therefore his ordinances, and his commandements which I cōmande thee this day, that it may b go wel with thee, and with thy childré after thee, and that thou maieſt prolong thy dayes vpon the earth, which the Lord thy God giueth thee for euer.
.¶ Then Moſés ſeparated thre cities on this ſide of Iordén towarde the ſonne riſing:
.That the flayer ſhulde flee thither, which had killed his neighbour at vnwares, and hated him not in time paſt, might flee, I ſay, vnto one of thoſe cities, and liue:
.* That is, * Bézer in the wildernes, in the plaine countrey of the Reubenites: and Ramóth in Gileád among the Gadites: & Golán in Baſhán among them of Manaſſéh.
.¶ So this is the lawe which Moſés ſet before the children of Iſraél.
.Theſe are the c witneſſes, and the ordinances, and the lawes which Moſés declared to the children of Iſraél after they came out of Egypt,
.On this ſide Iordén, in the valey ouer againſt Beth-peór, in the land of Sihón King of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heſhbón, whome Moſés and the children of Iſraél * ſmote, after they were come out of Egypt:
.And they poſſeſſed his land, and the lād of * Og King of Baſhán, two Kings of the Amorites, which were on this ſide Iordén toward the ſonne riſing:
.From Aroér, which is by the banke of the riuer Arnón, euen vnto mount Sión, which is Hermón,
.And all the plaine by Iordén Eſtward, euen vnto d the Sea, of the plaine, vnder the * ſprings of Piſgáh.
