Jeremiah 7

1.THe wordes that came to Ieremiáh from the Lord, ſaying,
2.Stand in the gate of the Lords Houſe & crye this worde there, and ſaie, Heare the worde of the Lord, all ye of Iudáh that entre in at theſe gates to worſhip the Lord.
3.Thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, the God of Iſraél, Améd your waies & your workes, and I wil let you dwell in this place.
4.Truſt not in lying wordes, ſaying, The Temple of the Lord, the Temple of the Lord: this is the Temple of the Lord.
5.For if you amend & redreſſe your waies and your workes: if you execute iudgemēt betwene a man and his neighbour,
6.And oppreſſe not the ſtranger, the fatherles and the widdowe & ſhed no innocent blood in this place, nether walke after other gods to your deſtruction,
7.Then wil I let you dwell in this place in the land that I gaue vnto your fathers, for euer and euer.
8.Beholde, you truſte in lying wordes, that can not profite.
9.Wil you ſteale, murder, and commit adulterie and ſweare falſely and burne incenſe vnto Báal, & walke after other gods whome ye knowe not?
10.And come and ſtand before me in this Houſe, whereupon my Name is called, & ſaie, We are deliuered, thogh we haue done all theſe abominations?
11.Is this Houſe become a dēne of theues, whereupō my Name is called before your eies? beholde, euen I ſee it, ſaith the Lord.
12.But go ye now vnto my place which was in Shiló, where I ſet my Name at the beginning, and beholde, what I did to it for the wickednes of my people Iſraél.
13.Therefore now becauſe ye haue done all theſe workes, ſaith the Lord, (& I roſe vp earely and ſpake vnto you: but when I ſpake, ye wolde not heare me, nether whé I called, wolde ye anſwer)
14.Therefore wil I do vnto this Houſe, whereupõ my Name is called, wherein alſo ye truſt, euen vnto the place that I gaue to you and to your fathers, as I haue done vnto Shiló.
15.And I wil caſt you out of my ſight, as I haue caſt out all your brethren, euen the whole ſede of Ephráim.
16.Therefore thou ſhalt not praie for this people, nether lift vp crie or praier for thé nether intreat me, for I wil not heare thee.
17.Seeſt thou not what thei do in the cities of Iudáh and in the ſtretes of Ieruſalém?
18.The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle yͤ fyre, and the women knede the dough to make cakes to the Queene of heauen & to powre out drinke offrings vnto other gods, that thei maie prouoke me vnto angre.
19.Do thei prouoke me to angre, ſaith the Lord, and not them ſelues to the confuſion of their owne faces?
20.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord God, Beholde, mine angre and my wrath ſhalbe powred vpon this place, vpon man & vpon beaſt, and vpon the tre of the field and vpon the frute of the grounde, and it ſhal burne and not be quenched.
21.Thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, the God of Iſraél, Put your burnt offrings vnto your ſacrifices, and eat the fleſh.
22.For I ſpake not vnto your fathers, nor commanded them, when I broght them out of the land of Egypt, cõcerning burnt offrings and ſacrifices.
23.But this thing commanded I them, ſaying, Obey my voice, & I wil be your God, and ye ſhal be my people: and walke ye in all the waies which I haue commanded you, that it maie be wel vnto you.
24.But thei wolde not obey, nor incline their eare, but went after the counſels and the ſtubbernes of their wicked heart, & went backwarde and not forwarde.
25.Since the daie that your fathers came vp out of the land of Egypt, vnto this day, I haue euen ſent vnto you all my ſeruants the Prophetes, riſing vp early euerie daie, and ſending them.
26.Yet wolde thei not heare me nor incline their eare, but hardened their necke and did worſe then their fathers.
27.Therefore ſhalt yu ſpeake all theſe wordes vnto thẽ, but thei wil not heare thee: thou ſhalt alſo crye vnto thẽ, but thei wil not anſwer thee.
28.But thou ſhalt ſaie vnto them, This is a nation yt heareth not the voice of ye Lord their God, nor receiueth diſcipline: trueth is periſhed, and is cleane gone out of their mouth.
29.Cut of thine heere, ô Ieruſalém, & caſt it awaie, and take vp a complaint on the hie places: for the Lord hathe reiected & forſaken the generation of his wrath.
30.For the children of Iudáh haue done euil in my ſight, ſaith the Lord: thei haue ſet their abominations in the Houſe, whereupon my Name is called, to pollute it.
31.And thei haue buylt the hie place of Tópheth, which is in the vallei of Ben-Hinnóm to burne their ſonnes & their daughters in the fyre, which I commanded thẽ not, nether came it in mine heart.
32.Therefore beholde, ye daies come, ſaith the Lord, that it ſhal no more be called Tópheth, nor the vallei of Ben-Hinnóm, but the valley of ſlaughter: for thei ſhal burye in Tópheth til there be no place.
33.And the carkeifes of this people ſhalbe meat for the foules of the heauen & for the beaſtes of the earth, and none ſhal fray them awaie.
34.Thẽ I wil cauſe to ceaſe from the cities of Iudáh and from the ſtretes of Ieruſalém the voyce of mirth and the voice of gladnes, the voyce of the bridegrome and the voyce of the bride: for the land ſhalbe deſolate.

Becauſe thei depended ſo muche on the Temple, w c was for his pmes, that he wolde be preſent, and defend them where yͤ Arke was: he ſendeth them to Gods iudgements againſt Shiló, where yͤ Arke had remained about 300 yeres. and after was také, the Prieſts ſlaine, & yͤ people miſerably diſcomfited, 1. Sam 4 11, Cha. 26, 6.

He ſheweth what is yͤ onelie remedie to redreſſe our fautes: to ſuffer God to lead vs into yͤ way, & to obey his calling, Iſa. 66, 4.

I wil ſend you into captiuitie as I haue done Ephráim, that is, the ten tribes.

To aſſure thē yͤ God had determined w t him ſelf to puniſh their wickednes, he ſheweth that yͤ prayer of the godlie can nothing auaile them, whiles they remaine in their obſtinacie againſt God, & wil not vſe yͤ meanes yͤ he vſeth to call thē to repentāce, Chap. 11. 14 & 14, 11.

That is, thei ſacrifice to yͤ ſunne, moone & ſtarres, which thei called the Quene of heauen, Chap. 44, 17. 2 king. 23, 5.

Shewing that it was not his chief purpoſe and intẽt that thei ſhulde offer ſacrifices: but that thei ſhuld regarde, wherefore thei were ordeined: to wit, to be ioyned to the worde as ſeales and confirmations of remiſsion of ſins in Chriſt: for without ye worde thei were vaine & vnprofitable.
