Jeremiah 8

1 The deſtruction of the Iewes. 4 The Lord moueth the people to amendement. 10 He reprehendeth the lying doctrine & the couetouſnes of the Prophetes & Prieſts.
1.AT that time, ſaith the Lord, thei ſhal bring out the bones of the Kings of Iudáh, and the bones of their princes, and the bones of the Prieſtes and the bones of the Prophetes, and the bones of the inhabitants of Ieruſalém out of their graues.
2.And thei ſhal ſpread thẽ before the ſunne & the moone, and all the hoſte of heauen, whome they haue loued, and whome thei haue ſerued, & whome thei haue followed, & whome thei haue ſoght, and whome thei haue worſhiped: thei ſhal not be gathered nor be buryed, but ſhal be as dung vpon the earth.
3.And death ſhalbe deſired rather then life of all ye reſidue that remaineth of this wicked familie, which remaine in all the places where I haue ſcattred them, ſaith ye Lord of hoſtes.
4.Thou ſhalt ſaie vnto them alſo, Thus ſaith the Lord, Shal thei fall & not ariſe? ſhal he turne awaie and not turne againe?
5.Wherefore is this people of Ieruſalém turned backe by a perpetual rebellion? thei gaue thẽ ſelues to deceit, & woldenot returne.
6.I hearkened and heard, but none ſpake aright: no man repented him of his wickednes, ſaying, What haue I done? euerie one turned to their race, as the horſe ruſheth into the battel.
7.Euen the ſtorcke in the aire knoweth her appointed times, & the turtle and the crane and the ſwallowe obſerue the time of their coming, but my people knoweth not the iudgement of the Lord.
8.How do ye ſaie, We are wiſe, & the Lawe of ye Lord is with vs? Lo, certeinly in vaine made he it, ye pen of the ſcribes is in vaine.
9.The wiſe men are aſhamed: thei are afraied and taken: lo, thei haue reiected the worde of the Lord, and what wiſdome is in them?
10.Therefore wil I giue their wiues vnto others, & their fields to thẽ that ſhal poſſeſſe thẽ: for euerie one from the leaſt euẽ vnto the greateſt is giuen to couetouſnes: & from the Prophet euẽ vnto the Prieſt, euerie one dealeth falſely.
11.For thei haue healed ye hurt of ye daughter of &c. of my people with ſwete wordes, ſaying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.
12.Were thei aſhamed whē they had cōmit ted abominatiō? nay, thei were not aſhamed, nether colde they haue anie ſhame: therefore ſhal they fall among the flaine: when I ſhal viſit them, they ſhalbe caſt downe, ſaith the Lord.
13.I wil ſurely cōſume them, ſaith ye Lord: there ſhalbe no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the figtre, and the leaf ſhal fade, & the things that I haue giuen them, ſhal departe from them.
14.Why do we ſtay? aſſemble your ſelues, & let vs entre into the ſtrong cities, & let vs be quiet there: for the Lord our God hathe put vs to ſilence and giuen vs water with gall to drinke, becauſe we haue ſinned againſt the Lord.
15.We loked for peace, but no good came, & for a time of health, & beholde troubles.
16.The neying of his horſes was heard frō Dan, the whole land trembled at the noiſe of the neying of his ſtrōg horſes: for thei are come, and haue deuoured the lād with all that is in it, the citie, and thoſe that owell therein.
17.For beholde, I wil ſend ſerpents, & cockatrices among you, which wil not be charmed, & they ſhal ſting you, ſaith ye Lord.
18.I wolde haue cōforted my ſelf againſt forowe, but mine heart is heauie in me.
19.Beholde, the voyce of the crye of ye daughter of my people for feare of thē of a farre countrey, Is not ye Lord in Zión? is not her King in her? Why haue they prouoked me to angre with their grauē images, and with the vanities of a ſtrange god?
20.The harueſt is paſt, the ſomer is ended and we are not holpen.
21.I am ſore vexed for ye hurt of ye daughter of my people: I am heauy, & aſtoniſhment hathe taken me.
22.Is there no balme at Gileád? is there no Phiſició there? Why thē is not ye health of the daughter of my people recouered?

1:a.
The enemie for gredines of gaine ſhal rifle your graues, and laye you before thoſe idoles, which in your life you worſhiped, to ſe if they can helpe you.

Because of the afflictions that thei ſhal fele through Gods iudgements.

Is there no hope, that thei wil returne?
6:d.
They are ful of hypocriſie, and euerie one followeth his owne fantaſie without any conſideracion.

He accuſeth them in that yt they are more ignorant of Gods iudgements then theſe birdes are of their appointed ſeaſons to diſcerne the colde and heat. as Iſa. 1, 3.

The Lawe doeth not profite you, nether ned it to haue bene writen for oght that you haue learned by it.

They that ſeime wiſe, may be aſhamed of their ignorance: for all wiſdome cõſiſteth in Gods worde.

He ſpeaketh of the perſone of the people, who when the enemie cometh, wil runne about to hyde theim ſelues, & acknowledge that it is Gods hand.

That is, hathe broght vs into extreme affliction, and thus they ſhal not attribute this plague to fortune, but to Gods iuſt iudgement, Chap. 9.15. & 21.15.

The people wonder that they haue ſo long time loked for ſuccour in vaine.

The Prophet ſpeaketh this.

Meaning, yt no mans helpe or meanes colde ſaue thē. for in Gileád was precious balme, Chap 46.11. or els deriding the vaine confidēce of the people who loked for helpe at their Prieſts, who ſhulde haue bene the phiſitions of their ſoules, & dwelt at Gileád, Hoſe. 6.8.
