Jeremiah 6

1 The comming of the Aſſyrians and Caldeans. 16 He exhorteth the Iewes to repentance.
1.O Ye children of Beniamín, prepare to flee out of the middes of Ieruſalém and blow the trumpet in Tekoá: ſet vp a ſtandart vpon Beth-haccérem: for a plague appeareth out of the North and great deſtruction.
2.I haue compared the daughter of Zión to a beautiful and deintie woman.
3.The paſtors with their flockes ſhal come vnto her: thei ſhal pitch their tents round about by her, & euerie one ſhal fede in his place.
4.Prepare warre againſt her: ariſe, and let vs go vp toward the South: wo vnto vs: for the day declineth, and the ſhadowes of the euening are ſtretched out.
5.Ariſe, and let vs go vp by night, and deſtroy her palaces.
6.For thus hathe the Lord of hoſtes ſaid, Hewe downe wood, and caſt a mount againſt Ieruſalém: this citie muſt be viſited: all oppreſsion is in the middes of it.
7.As yͤ fountaine caſteth out her waters, ſo ſhe caſteth out her malice: crueltie and ſpoile is continually heard in her before me with ſorow and ſtrokes.
8.Be thou inſtructed, ô Ieruſalém, leſt my ſoule departe from thee, leſt I make thee deſolate as a land, that none inhabiteth.
9.Thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, Thei ſhal gather as a vine, the reſidue of Iſraél: turne backe thine hand as the grape gatherer into the baſkets.
10.Vnto whome ſhal I ſpeake, & admoniſh that thei may heare? beholde, their eares are vncircumciſed, and thei can not hearken: beholde, the worde of yͤ Lord is vnto them as a reproche: thei haue no delite in it.
11.Therefore I am ful of the wrath of the Lord: I am wearie with holding it: I wil powre it out vpon the childrẽ in yͤ ſtrete, & likewiſe vpõ yͤ aſſemblie of the yong men: for the houſband ſhal euen be taken with the wife, & the aged with him that is ful of daies.
12.And their houſes with their lands, and wiues alſo ſhalbe turned vnto ſtrangers: for I wil ſtretch out mine hand vpon the inhabitants of the land, ſaith the Lord.
13.For frõ the leaſt of them, euen vnto the greateſt of them, euerie one is giuen vnto couetouſnes, and from the Prophet euen vnto the Prieſt, thei all deale falſely.
14.Thei haue healed alſo the hurt of the daughter of my people with ſwete wordes, ſaying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.
15.Were thei aſhamed when they had committed abominacion? nay, thei were not aſhamed, no nether colde they haue anie ſhame: therefore thei ſhal fall among the ſlaine: when I ſhal viſit them, they ſhalbe caſt downe, ſaith the Lord.
16.Thus ſaith the Lord, Stand in the waies and beholde, and aſke for the olde waie, which is the good waye & walke therein, and ye ſhal finde reſt for your ſoules: but thei ſaid, We wil not walke therein.
17.Alſo I ſet watchemen ouer you, which ſaid, Take hede to yͤ ſound of the trumpet: but thei ſaid, We wil not take hede.
18.Heare therefore, ye Gentiles, and thou Congregacion knowe, what is among them.
19.Heare, ô earth, beholde, I wil cauſe a plague to come vpon this people, euen the frute of their owne imaginacions: becauſe thei haue not taken hede vnto my wordes, nor to my Law, but caſt it of.
20.To what purpoſe bringeſt thou me incenſe from Shebá, and ſwete calamus frō a farre countrey? Your burnt offrings are not pleaſant, nor your ſacrifices ſwete vnto me.
21.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord, Beholde, I wil lay ſtumbling blockes before this people, and the fathers and the ſonnes together ſhal fall vpon them: the neighbour and his friend ſhal periſh.
22.Thus ſaith the Lord, Beholde, a people cometh from the North countrey, and a great nation ſhal ariſe from the ſides of the earth.
23.With bowe and ſhield ſhal they be weaponed: thei are cruel and wil haue no compaſsion: their voyce roareth like the ſea, and they ride vpon horſes, wel appointed, like men of warre againſt thee, ô daughter Zión.
24.We haue heard their fame, & our hands waxe feble: ſorowe is come vpon vs, as the ſorowe of a woman in trauail.
25.Go not forthe into the field, nor walke by the way: for the ſworde of the enemie & feare is on euerie ſide.
26.O daughter of my people, gird thee with ſackecloth, and wallowe thy ſelf in the aſhes: make lamentation, and bitter mourning as for thine onely ſonne: for the deſtroier ſhal ſuddenly come vpon vs.
27.I haue ſet thee for a defence & fortreſſe among my people, that thou maieſt knowe and trye their waies.
28.Thei are all rebellious traitors, walking craftely: they are braſſe, & yron, thei all are deſtroyers.
29.The bellowes are burnt: the leade is cōſumed in the fyre: the founder melteth in vaine: for the wicked are not taken away.
30.Thei ſhal call them reprobate ſiluer, becauſe the Lord hathe reiected them.

When yͤ people began to feare Gods iudgements, yͤ falſe Prophets cõforted them by flatterings, ſhewing yͤ God wolde ſend peace and not warre.

Wherein the patriarkes and Prophets walked, directed by yͤ worde of God: ſignifyĩg yͤ there is no true way, but that wͤ God preſcribeth.
