Jeremiah 49

1 The worde of the Lord againſt the Ammonites. 7 Idumea. 23 Damaſcus. 28 Kedar. 34 & Elam.
1.VNto the children of Ammón thus ſaith the Lord, Hathe Iſraél no ſonnes? or hathe he none heire? Why then hathe their King poſſeſſed Gad? and his people dwell in his cities?
2.Therefore beholde, the dayes come, ſaith the Lord, that I wil cauſe a noyſe of warre to be heard in Rabbáh of the Ammonites, and it ſhalbe a deſolate heape, & her daughters ſhalbe burnt with fyre: then ſhal Iſraél poſſeſſe thoſe that poſſeſſed him, ſaith the Lord.
3.Howle, ô Heſhbón, for Ai is waſted: crye ye daughters of Rabbáh: girde you with ſackeclothe: mourne & runne to & fro by ye hedges: for their King ſhal go into captiuitie, & his Prieſts, and his princes likewiſe.
4.Wherefore glorieſt thou in the valleis? thy valley floweth away, ô rebellious daughter: ſhe truſted in her treaſures, ſaying, Who ſhal come vnto me?
5.Beholde, I wil bring a feare vpon thee, ſaith the Lord God of hoſtes, of all thoſe that be about thee, and ye ſhalbe ſcarred euerie man right forthe, & none ſhal gather him that fleeth.
6.And afterward I wil bring againe the captiuitie of the children of Ammón.
7.¶ To Edóm thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, Is wiſdome no more in Temán? is coũſel periſhed from their children? is their wiſdome vaniſhed?
8.Flee, ye inhabitants of Dedán( they are turned backe, and haue conſulted to dwell) for I haue broght the deſtruction of Eſau vpon him, and the time of his viſitation.
9.If the grape gatherers come to thee, wolde they not leaue ſome grapes? if theues come by night, they wil deſtroye til they haue ynough.
10.For I haue diſcouered Eſáu: I haue vncouered his ſecrets, and he ſhal not be able to hide him ſelf: his ſede is waſted, and his brethrẽ and his neighbours, and there ſhalbe none to ſay,
11.Leaue thy fatherles children, & I wil preſerue them aliue, and let thy widowes truſt in me.
12.For thus ſaith the Lord, Beholde, thei whoſe iudgement was not to drinke of the cuppe, haue aſſuredly drunkẽ, and art thou he that ſhal eſcape fre? thou ſhalt not go fre, but thou ſhalt ſurely drinke of it.
13.For I haue ſworne by my ſelf, ſaith the Lord, that Bozráh ſhal be waſte, and for a reproche, and a deſolation, and a curſe, and all the cities thereof ſhalbe perpetual deſolations.
14.I haue heard a rumour from the Lord, & an embaſſadour is ſent vnto the heathen, ſaying, Gather you together, and come againſt her, and riſe vp to the battel.
15.For lo, I wil make thee but ſmale among the heathen, and deſpiſed among men.
16.Thy feare, and the pride of thine heart hathe deceiued thee, thou that dwelleſt in the cleftes of the rocke, and kepeſt the height of the hill: thogh thou ſhulde make thy neſt as hie as the egle, I wil bring thee downe from thence, ſaith the Lord.
17.¶ Alſo Edóm ſhalbe deſolate: euerie one that goeth by it, ſhalbe aſtoniſhed, & ſhal hiſſe at all the plagues thereof,
18.As in the ouerthrowe of Sodóm, and of Gomoráh, and the places thereof nere about, ſaith the Lord: no man ſhal dwell there, nether ſhal the ſonnes of men remaine in it.
19.Beholde, he ſhal come vp like a lyon from the ſwelling of Iordén vnto the ſtrong dwelling place: for I wil make him to reſt, euen I wil make him to haſte away from her, & who is a choſen mã that I may appoint againſt her? for who is like me? & who wil appoint me ye time? & who is the ſhepherd that wil ſtand before me?
20.Therefore heare the coũſel of the Lord that he hathe deuiſed againſt Edóm, & his purpoſe yt he hathe cõceiued againſt ye in habitans of Temán: ſurely the leaſt of the flocke ſhal drawe them out: ſurely he ſhal make their habitations deſolate with thẽ.
21.The earth is moued at the noyce of their fall: the crye of their voyce is heard in the red Sea.
22.Beholde, he ſhal come vp, and flie as the egle, and ſpread his wings ouer Bozráh, and at that day ſhal the heart of the ſtrõg men of Edóm be as the heart of a woman in trauail.
23.¶ Vnto Damaſcus he ſaith, Hamáth is coũfoũded and Arpád, for thei haue heard euil tidings, and they are faint hearted as one on the feareful ſea that can not reſt.
24.Damaſcus is diſcouraged, and turneth her ſelf to flight *and feare hathe ſeaſed her: anguiſh & ſorowes haue taken her as a woman in trauail.
25.How is the glorious citie not reſerued, the citie of my ioy?
26.Therefore her yong mẽ ſhal fall in her ſtretes, and all her men of warre ſhalbe cut of in that day, faith the Lord of hoſtes.
27.And I wil kindle a fyre in the walle of Damaſcus, which ſhal cõſume the palaces of Ben-hadád.
28.¶ Vnto Kedár, and to the kingdomes of Hazór, which Nebuchad-nezzár King of Babél ſhal ſmite, thus ſaith the Lord, Ariſe, & go vp vnto Kedár, and deſtroye the men of the Eaſt.
29.Their tentes and their flockes ſhal they take away: yea, they ſhal take to the ſelues their curtaines, and all their veſſels, and their camels & they ſhal crye vnto them, Feare is on euerie ſide.
30.Flee, get you farre of ( thei haue conſulted to dwell) ô ye inhabitants of Hazór, faith ye Lord: for Nebuchad-nezzár King of Babél hathe taken counſel againſt you, and hathe deuiſed a purpoſe againſt you.
31.Ariſe, & get you vp vnto the welthie nation that dwelleth without care, ſaith the Lord, which haue nether gates nor barres, but dwell alone.
32.And their camels ſhalbe a boutie, and the multitude of their cattel a ſpoile, and I wil ſcatter thẽ into all windes, and to the vtmoſt corners, and I wil bring their deſtruction from all the ſides thereof, ſaith the Lord.
33.And Hazór ſhal be a dwelling for dragons, & deſolation for euer: there ſhal no man dwell there, nor the ſonnes of men remaine in it.
34.¶ The wordes of the Lord that came to Ieremiáh the Prophet, cõcerning Elám, in the beginning of the reigne of Zedekiáh King of Iudáh, ſaying,
35.Thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, Beholde, I wil breake the bowe of Elám, euen the chief of their ſtrength.
36.And vpon Elám I wil bring the foure winds frõ the foure quarters of heauen, & wil ſcattre thẽ towardes all theſe windes, and there ſhalbe no nation, whether the fugitiues of Elám ſhal not come.
37.For I wil cauſe Elám to be afraied before their enemies, and before them that ſeke their liues, and wil bring vpon them a plague, euen the indignation of my wrath, ſaith the Lord, and I wil ſend the ſworde after them til I haue conſumed them.
38.And I wil ſet my throne in Elám, and I wil deſtroye bothe the King and the princes from thẽce, ſaith the Lord: but lin the latter dayes I wil bring againe the captiuitie of Elám, ſaith the Lord.

Meaning that God wolde vtterly deſtroy them, and not ſpare one, thogh the grape gatherers leaue ſome grapes, & theues ſeke but til they haue ynough, Obad. 1,5

The deſtruction ſhalbe ſo great, that there ſhalbe none left to take care ouer ye widdowes, & fatherles

I haue not ſpared mine owne people, & how ſhulde I pitie thee?

He ſheweth that they of Hazór wil flee to the Arabiãs for ſuccour, but that ſhal not auaile thẽ

That is, Perſia, ſo called of Elám the ſonne of Shem.

Becauſe the Perſians were good archers, he ſheweth ye the thing wherein they put their truſt, ſhal do not profite them.

This may be referred to the empire of the Perſians, and Medes after ye Caldeans, or vnto the time of Chriſt, as Chap 48.47.

I wil place Nebuchad-nezzár there, and in theſe prophecies Ieremiáh ſpeaketh of thoſe countreies, which ſhulde be ſubdued vnder the firſt of thoſe foure monarchies whereof Daniel maketh mencion.
