Jeremiah 31

1 He rehearceth Gods benefites after their returne from Babylon, 23 And the ſpiritual ioye of the faithful in the Church.
1.AT the ſame time, ſaith the Lord, wil I be the God of all the families of Iſraél, and they ſhalbe my people.
2.Thus ſaith the Lord, The people which eſcaped the ſworde, founde grace in the wildernes: he walked before Iſraél to cauſe him to reſt.
3.The Lord hathe appeared vnto me of olde, ſay they: Yea, I haue loued thee with an euerlaſting loue, therefore with mercie I haue drawen thee.
4.Againe I wil buylde thee, and thou ſhalt be buylded, ô virgine Iſraél: thou ſhalt ſtil be adorned with thy tymbrels, and ſhalt go forthe in the dace of thé that be ioyful.
5.Thou ſhalt yet plāt vines vpon the moútaines of Samaria, and the planters that plant them, ſhal make them commune.
6.For the daies ſhal come that the watchemen vpon the moút of Ephráim ſhal crye, Ariſe, and let vs go vp vnto Zión to the Lord our God.
7.For thus ſaith the Lord, Reioyce with gladnes for Iaakób, and ſhoute for ioye among the chief of the Gentiles: publiſh praiſe, and ſay, O Lord, ſaue thy people, the remnant of Iſraél.
8.Beholde, I wil bring thé from the North countrey, and gather them from the coaſtes of the worlde, with the blinde & the lame among them, with the woman with childe, & her that is deliuered alſo: a great companie ſhal returne hether.
9.They ſhal come weping, and with mercie wil I bring them againe: I wil leade them by the riuers of water in a ſtraight way, wherein they ſhal not ſtumble: for I am a Father to Iſraél, and Ephráim is my firſt borne.
10.Heare the worde of the Lord, ô ye Gétiles, and declare in the yles a farre of, & ſay, He y ſcattered Iſraél, wil gather him and wil kepe him, as a ſhepherd doeth his flocke.
11.For the Lord hathe redemed Iaakób, & ráſomed him from the hand of him, that was ſtronger then he.
12.Therefore they ſhal come, and reioyce in the light of Zión, and ſhal runne to the boútifulnes of the Lord, euen for y wheat and for the wine, and for the oyle, and for the increaſe of ſhepe, and bullockes: and their ſoule ſhalbe as a watered garden, and the1 ſhal haue no more ſorow.
13.Thé ſhal the virgine reioyce in the dace, and the yong men, & the olde men together: for I wil turne theii mourning into ioye, and wil comforte them, & giue them ioye for their ſorowes.
14.And I wil repleniſh the ſoule of the Prieſts with farnes, and my people ſhalbe ſatiſfied with my goodnes, ſaith the Lord.
15.Thus ſaith the Lord, A voice was heard on hie, a mourning and bitter weping: Rahél weping for her children, refuſed to be comforted for her children, becauſe thei were not.
16.Thus ſaith the Lord, Refraine thy voice from weping, and thine eyes from teares: for thy worke ſhalbe rewarded, ſaith ye Lord, and thei ſhal come againe from the land of the enemie:
17.And there is hope in thine end, ſaith the Lord, that thy children ſhal come againe to their owne borders.
18.I haue heard Ephráim lamenting thus, Thou haſt corrected me, and I was chaſtiſed as an vntamed calfe: conuert thou me, and I ſhalbe conuerted: for thou art ye Lord my God.
19.Surely after that I conuerted, I repented: & after that I was inſtructed, I ſmote vpon my thigh: I was aſhamed, yea, euen confounded, becauſe I did beare the reproche of my youth.
20.Is Ephráim my dere ſonne or pleaſant childe? yet ſince I ſpake vnto him, I ſtil remembred him: therefore my bowelles are troubled for him: I wil ſurely haue cõpaſſion vpon him, ſaith the Lord.
21.Set thee vp ſignes: make thee heapes: ſet thine heart towarde the path and waie, that thou haſt walked: turne againe, ô virgine of Iſraél: turne againe to theſe thy cities.
22.How long wilt thou go aſtraie, ô thou rebellious daughter? for the Lord hathe created a newe thing in the earth: A WOMAN ſhal compaſſe a man.
23.Thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, the God of Iſraél, Yit ſhal thei ſaie this thing in the land of Iudáh, and in the cities thereof, when I ſhal bring againe their captiuitie, The Lord bleſſe thee, ô habitation of iuſtice & holie mountaine.
24.And Iudáh ſhal dwell in it, & all the cities thereof together, the houſbandmen and thei that go forthe with the flocke.
25.For I haue ſatiat the weary ſoule, and I haue repleniſhed euerie ſorowful ſoule.
26.Therefore I awaked and behelde, and my ſlepe was ſwete vnto me.
27.Beholde, the daies come, ſaith the Lord, that I wil ſowe the houſe of Iſraél, and the houſe of Iudáh with the ſede of man and with the ſede of beaſt.
28.And like as I haue watched vpon them, to plucke vp and to roote out, & to throwe downe, and to deſtroye, and to plague them, ſo wil I watche ouer them, to buylde and to plant them, ſaith the Lord.
29.In thoſe daies ſhal they ſay no more, The fathers haue eaten a ſowre grape, & the childrens teeth are ſet on edge.
30.But euerie one ſhal dye for his owne iniquitie: euerie man that eateth the ſowre grape, his teeth ſhalbe ſet on edge.
31.Beholde, the daies come, ſaith ye Lord, that I wil mak a newe couenant with the houſe of Iſraél, and with the houſe of Iudáh,
32.Not according to the couenant that I made with their fathers, when I toke them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, the which my couenant they brake, althogh I was an houſband vnto them, ſaith the Lord.
33.But this ſhalbe the couenant that I wil make with the houſe of Iſraél, After thoſe daies, ſaith the Lord, I wil put my Law in their inwarde partes, & write it in their hearts, & wil be their God, and thei ſhalbe my people.
34.And thei ſhal teache nomore euerie mã his neighbour and euerie man his brother, ſaying, Knowe the Lord: for they ſhal all knowe me from the leaſt of them vnto the greateſt of them, ſaith the Lord: for I wil forgiue their iniquitie, and wil remẽber their ſinnes no more.
35.Thus ſaith the Lord, which giueth the ſunne for a light to the day, and the courſes of ye moone and of the ſtarres for a light to the night, which breaketh the ſea, whẽ the waues thereof roare: his Name is the Lord of hoſtes.
36.If theſe ordinances departe out of my ſight, ſaith the Lord, then ſhal the ſede of Iſraél ceaſe from being a nation before me, for euer.
37.Thus ſaith the Lord, If the heauens can be meaſured, or the fundacions of the earth be ſearched out beneth, then wil I caſt of all the ſede of Iſraél, for all that they haue done, ſaith the Lord.
38.Beholde, the dayes come, ſaith the Lord, that the citie ſhalbe buylt to the Lord frõ the tower of Hananeél, vnto the gate of the corner.
39.And the line of the meaſure ſhal go forthe in his preſence vpon the hil Garéb, & ſhal compaſſe about to Goáth.
40.And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the aſſhes, and all the fields vnto the broke of Kidrón, and vnto the corner of the horſegate towarde the Eaſt, ſhalbe holie vnto the Lord, nether ſhal it be plucked vp nor deſtroyed anie more for euer.

When this noble gouernour ſhal come: meaning Chriſt, not onely Iudáh & Iſraél, but the reſt of y worlde ſhalbe called.

Because their deliuerance from Ba bylón was a figure of their deliuerance from ſinne, he ſheweth how this ſhulde be ꝑcured, to wit by Ieſus Chriſt whome a woman ſhulde conceiue, & beare in her wõbe Which is a ſtrange thing in earth, becauſe he ſhulde be borne of a virgine with out man or, he meaneth, that Ieruſalém which was like a barẽ woman in her cap tiuitie ſhulde be fruteful as ſhe, that is ioyned in mariage, and whome God bleſſeth with children.

Hauing vnderſtand this viſiõ of the Meſsiah to come in whome the two houſes of Iſraél, and Iudáh ſhulde be ioyned, I reioyced.

Thou ſhalt haue ſtil occaſió to reioyce: which is mét by tabrets and dancing, as their cuſtome was after notable victories, Exod 15, 20. iudg 5.2 and chap. 11,34

I wil multiplie, and enriche them with people and cattel.

Becauſe the Iſraelites, w were the ten tribes, neuer returned to Samaria, therefore this muſt be ſpiritually vnderſtand vnder y kingdome of Chriſt, which was y reſtauracion of the true Iſraél.

That is, ſhal eat the frute thereof, as Leu. 19,23 dan 20.6

The wicked vſed this prouerbe, when they did murmure againſt Gods iudgements pronõuced by the Prophetes, ſaying, That their fathers had committed the faute, and that the children were puniſhed, Eze. 18, 3.

Thogh the couenant of redemptiõ made to the fathers, & this which was giuen after, ſeme diuers, yet thet are all one, & grounded on Ieſus Chriſt, ſaue that this is called newe becauſe of the manifeſtation of Chriſt, and the abundant graces of the holie Goſt giuen to his Church vnder the Goſpel.

He ſheweth what ſhal be the concorde and loue of all vnder the Goſpel, where none ſhalbe refuſed for their infirmities: & euery óne ſhal exhort one another to imbrace it.

Vnder the kingdome of Chriſt there ſhilbe none blinded with ignorance, but I wil giue thẽ faith, & knowledge of God for remiſsion of their ſinnes, and daily increaſe the ſame: ſo that it ſhal not ſeme to come ſo muche by the preaching of my miniſters, as by the inſtruction of mine holie Spi rit, Iſa. 54, 13. but the ful accompliſhing hereof is reſerred to the kingdome of Chriſt, when we ſhalbe ioyned with our head.

That is, lamenting their ſinnes, which had not giuen eare to the Prophetes, & therefore followeth y God receiued thê to mercie, Chap 50, 4

Where they founde no impediméts, but abundance of all things.

If the ſunne, moone, and ſtarres can not but giue light according to mine ordinance, ſo long as this world laſteth ſo ſhal my Church neuer faile, nether ſhal anie thing hinder it: and as ſure as I wil haue a people, ſo certeine is it, that I wil leaue them my worde for euer to gouerne them with.
