Jeremiah 26

8 Ieremiah moueth the people to repentance. 7 He is taken of the falſe Prophetes and Prieſtes and broght to iudgement. 23 Uriáh the Prophet is killed of Iehoiakim cõtrarie to the wil of God.
1.IN the beginning of the reigne of Iehoiakím the ſonne of Ioſiáh King of Iudáh, came this worde from the Lord, ſaying,
2.Thus ſaith the Lord, Stand in the court of the Lords Houſe, and ſpeake vnto all the cities of Iudáh, which come to worſhip in the Lords Houſe, all the wordes yt I cõmãd thee to ſpeake: kepe not a worde backe,
3.If ſo be they wil hearken, and turne euerie man from his euil way, that I may repent me of the plague, which I haue determined to bring vpon them, becauſe of the wickednes of their workes.
4.And yu ſhalt ſay vnto thẽ, Thus ſaith the Lord, If ye wil not heare me to walke in my Lawes, which I haue ſet before you,
5.And to heare the wordes of my ſeruants the Prophetes, whome I ſent vnto you, bothe riſing vp early, and ſending them, and wil not obeie them,
6.Then wil I make this Houſe like Shilóh, and wil make this citie a curſſe to all the nacions of the earth.
7.So the Prieſtes, and the Prophetes, and all the people heard Ieremiáh ſpeaking theſe wordes in the Houſe of the Lord.
8.Now when Ieremiáh had made an end of ſpeaking all that the Lord had commanded him to ſpeake vnto all the people, the Prieſtes, and the Prophetes, and all the people toke him, and ſaid, Thou ſhalt dye the death.
9.Why haſt thou prophecied in the Name of ye Lord, ſaying, This Houſe ſhalbe like Shilóh, & this citie ſhalbe deſolate without an inhabitãt? & all the people were gathered againſt Ieremiáh in the Houſe of the Lord.
10.And when the princes of Iudáh heard of theſe things, thei came vp from ye Kings houſe into the Houſe of the Lord, & ſate downe in the entrie of the newe gate of the Lords Houſe.
11.Then ſpake the Prieſtes, and the Prophetes vnto the princes, & to all ye people, ſaying, This man is worthie to dye: for he hathe prophecied againſt this citie, as ye haue heard with your eares.
12.Then ſpake Ieremiáh vnto all the princes, & to all the people, ſaying, The Lord hathe ſent me to prophecie againſt this Houſe and againſt this citie all the things that ye haue heard.
13.Therefore now amẽd your waies & your workes, & heare the voice of ye Lord your God, yt the Lord may repent him of ye plague, yt he hathe pronounced againſt you.
14.As for me, beholde, I am in your hands: do with me as ye thinke good and right.
15.But knowe ye for certeine, yt if ye put me to death, ye ſhal ſurely bring innocent blood vpon your ſelues, and vpon this citie, and vpon the inhabitants thereof: for of a trueth ye Lord hath ſent me vnto you, to ſpeake all theſe wordes in your eares.
16.Then ſaid the princes and all the people vnto the Prieſtes & to the Prophetes, This man is not worthie to dye: for he hathe ſpoken vnto vs in the Name of the Lord our God.
17.Then roſe vp certeine of the Elders of the land, and ſpake to all the aſſemblie of the people, ſaying,
18.Micháh the Moraſhite prophecied in ye dayes of Hezekiáh King of Iudáh, and ſpake to all the people of Iudáh, ſaying, Thus ſaith ye Lord of hoſtes, Zión ſhalbe plowed like a field, and Ieruſalém ſhalbe an heape, & the mountaine of the Houſe ſhalbe as the high places of the foreſt.
19.Did Hezekiáh King of Iudáh, and all Iudáh put him to death? did he not feare the Lord, and prayed before the Lord, and the Lord repented him of the plague, that he had pronoũced againſt them? thus might we procure great euil againſt our ſoules.
20.And there was alſo a man that prophecied in ye Name of the Lord, one Vrijáh the ſonne of Shemaiáh, of Kiriáth-iareim, who prophecied againſt this citie, and againſt this land, according to all the wordes of Ieremiáh.
21.Now when Iehoiakím the King with all his men of power, & all the princes heard his wordes, the King ſoght to ſlaie him. But when Vrijáh heard it, he was afraied and fled, and went into Egypt.
22.Thẽ Iehoiakím the King ſent men into Egypt, euen Elnathán the ſonne of Achbór, and certeine with him into Egypt.
23.And thei fet Vrijáh out of Egypt, and broght him vnto Iehoiakím the King, who ſlewe him with the ſworde, and caſt his dead bodie into the graues of the children of the people.
24.But the hand of Ahikám the ſonne of Shaphán was with Ieremiáh yt thei ſhoulde not giue him into the hand of the people to put him to death.

That is, in that place of the Temple whereunto the people reſort out of all Iudáh to ſacrifice

Becauſe of Gods promes to the Temple, Pſal. 132, 14. ye he wolde for euer remaine there, ye hypocrites thoght this Temple colde neuer periſh, and therefore thoght it blaſphemie to ſpeake againſt it, Mat 26, 61. act 6, 13, not cõſidering yt this was ment of ye Church, where God wil remaine foreuer.

Ebr. iudgement of death belongeth to this man.

He bothe ſheweth the cauſe of his doings plainely, and alſo threatneth them yt they ſhoulde nothĩg auaile, thogh they ſhoulde put him to death, but heape greater vengeance vpon their heads.

So that the citie was not deſtroyed, but by miracle was deliuered out of the hands of Saneheríb.

Here is declared the furie of tyrants, who can not abide to heare Gods worde declared, but perſecute the miniſters thereof, and yet in the end they preuaile nothing, but prouoke Gods iudgements ſo muche ye more.

As in the firſt Hezekiáhs example is to be followed. ſo in this other Iehoiakims act is to be abhorred: for Gods plague did light on him, and his houſeholde.

Which declareth that nothing colde haue appeaſed their furie, if God had not moued this noble man to ſtãd valiantly in his defence.
