Jeremiah 16

1.THe worde of the Lord came alſo vnto me, ſaying,
2.Thou ſhalt not take thee a wife, nor haue ſonnes nor daughters in this place.
3.For thus ſaith the Lord concerning the ſonnes, and cōcerning the daughters that are borne in this place, and concerning their mothers that beare them, & concerning their fathers, that beget them in this land.
4.Thei ſhal dye of deaths & diſeaſes: thei ſhal not be lamented, nether ſhal thei be buryed, but thei ſhalbe as doungue vpon the earth, and thei ſhalbe conſumed by the ſworde, and by famine, and their carkaſes ſhalbe meat for the foules of the heauen, and for the beaſtes of the earth.
5.For thus ſaith the Lord, Entre not into the houſe of mournīg, nether go to lamēt, nor be moued for them: for I haue taken my peace frō this people, ſaith the Lord, euen mercie and compaſsion.
6.Bothe ye great, & the ſmale ſhal dye in this land: thei ſhal not be buryed, nether ſhal men lamēt for them nor cut them ſelues, nor make them ſelues bald for them.
7.Thei ſhal not ſtretche out the hands for them in the mourning to cōfort them for the dead, nether ſhal thei giue them the cup of conſolation to drinke for their father or for their mother.
8.Thou ſhalt not alſo go into the houſe of feaſting to ſit with thē to eat & to drinke.
9.For thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, the God of Iſraél, Beholde, I wil cauſe to ceaſe out of this place in your eyes, euen in your daies the voice of mirth, & the voice of gladnes, the voice of the bride grome and the voice of the bride.
10.And when thou ſhalt ſhewe this people all theſe wordes, & thei ſhal ſaie vnto thee, Wherefore hathe the Lord pronounced all this great plague againſt vs? or what is our iniquitie? and what is our ſinne that we haue cōmitted agaiſt ye Lord our God?
11.Then ſhalt thou ſaie vnto them, Becauſe your fathers haue forſaken me, ſaith the Lord, and haue walked after other gods, and haue ſerued them, & worſhiped thē, & haue forſakē me, & haue not kept my Law,
12.( And ye haue done worſe then your fathers: for beholde, you walke euerie one after the ſtubbernes of his wicked heart, and wil not heare me)
13.Therefore wil I driue you out of this land into a land that ye knowe not, nether you, nor your fathers, and there ſhal ye ſerue other gods daie and night: for I wil ſhewe you no grace.
14.Beholde, therefore, ſaith the Lord, the daies come that it ſhal no more be ſaid, The Lord liueth, which broght vp ye children of Iſraél out of the land of Egypt,
15.But the Lord liueth, that broght vp the children of Iſraél from the land of the North, and from all the lands where he had ſcatered them, and I wil bring them againe into their land that I gaue vnto their fathers.
16.Beholde, ſaith the Lord, I wil ſend out many fiſhers, and thei ſhal fiſh them, and after, wil I ſend out many hunters, & thei ſhal hunt them from euerie mountaine and from euerie hill, and out of the caues of the rockes.
17.For mine eyes are vpon all their waies: thei are not hid from my face, nether is their iniquitie hid from mine eyes.
18.And firſt I wil recompence their iniquitie and their ſinne double, becauſe they take them. haue defiled my land, and haue filled mine inheritance with their filthie carions and their abominations.
19.O Lord, thou art my force, & my ſtrẽgth & my refuge in the day of affliction: the Gentiles ſhal come vnto thee frõ the ends of the worlde, and ſhal ſay, Surely our fathers haue inherited lies, & vanitie, wherein there was no profite.
20.Shal a man make gods vnto him ſelf, & they are no gods?
21.Beholde, therfore I wil this once teache the: I wil ſhew the mine hãd & my power, & thei ſhal know yt my Name is the Lord.

1:a.
Meaning, ye the afflictiō ſhulde be ſo horrible in Ieruſalem, that wife, and childrē inulde but increaſe his ſorowe.
5:b.
Signifying that ye afflictiō ſhulde be ſo great ye one ſhulde not haue leaſure to comfort anather.
6:c.
That is, ſhal do not rent their clothes in ſigne of mourning.
7:d.
For in theſe great extremities all conſolation & comfort ſhalbe in vaine.

Signifying ye benefite of their deliuerance out of Babylon ſhulde be ſo great, that it ſhulde aboliſh the remembrance of their deliuerance frō Egypt: but he hathe here chiefly reſpect to the ſpiritual deliuerance vnder Chriſt.

By ye fiſhers and hunters are ment ye Babylonians and Caldeans who ſhulde deſtroy them in ſuch ſort that if they eſeaped the one, ye other ſhulde

That is, their ſonnes & daughters, wc they offred to Molech.

He wondereth at ye great mercie of God in this deliuerance, wc ſhal not onely extend to the Iewes, but alſo the Gentiles.
19:k.
Our fathers were moſt vile idolaters: therefore it cometh onely of Gods mercie, that he performeth his promes, & hathe not vtterly caſt vs of.
21:l.
They ſhal once againe fele my power, & mercie for their deliuerãce, that thei may learne to worſhip me.
