Jeremiah 17

1 The frowardnes of the Iewes. 5 Curſed be thoſe that put their confidence in man. 9 Mans heart is wicked. 10 God is the ſearcher of the heart. 13 The liuing waters are forſaken. 21 The right keping of the Sabbath commanded.
1.THe ſinne of Iudáh is writen with a penne of yron, & with the point of a diamóde, & graué vpõ the table of their heart, & vpon the hornes of your altars.
2.They remẽber their altars as their children, with their groues by the grene trees vpon the hie hilles.
3.O my mountaine in the field, I wil giue thy ſubſtance, & all thy treaſures to be ſpoiled, for the ſinne of thy high places through out all thy borders.
4.And thou ſhalt reſt, and in thee ſhalbe areſt frõ thine heritage that I gaue thee, & I wil cauſe thee to ſerue thine enemies in the lãd, which thou knoweſt not: for ye haue kindeled a fyre in mine angre, which ſhal burne for euer.
5.¶ Thus ſaith the Lord, Curſed be the mã that truſteth in mã, & maketh fleſh his arme, & withdraweth his heart frõ ye Lord.
6.For he ſhalbe like the heath in the wildernes, and ſhal not ſe when anie good cometh, but ſhal inhabit the parched places in the wildernes, in a ſalt land, and not inhabited.
7.Bleſſed be the man, that truſteth in the Lord, and whoſe hope the Lord is.
8.For he ſhalbe as a tre that is planted by the water, which ſpreadeth out her rootes by the riuer, and ſhal not fele when the heat cometh, but her leaf ſhalbe grene, and ſhal not care for the yere of drought, nether ſhal ceaſe from yelding frute.
9.The heart is deceitful and wicked aboue all things, who can knowe it?
10.I the Lord ſearche the heart, & trye the reines, euen to giue euerie man according to his wayes, and according to the frute of his workes.
11.As the partryche gathereth the yong, which ſhe hathe not broght forthe: ſo he that getteth riches, and not by right, ſhal leaue them in the middes of his dayes, and at his end ſhalbe a foole.
12.As a glorious throne exalted from the beginning, ſo is the place of our Sãctuarie.
13.O Lord, the hope of Iſraél, all that forſake thee, ſhalbe confounded: thei that departe from thee, ſhalbe written in the earth, becauſe they haue forſakẽ the Lord, the fountaine of liuing waters.
14.Heale me, ô Lord, and I ſhalbe whole: ſaue me, and I ſhalbe ſaued: for thou art my praiſe.
15.Beholde, they ſay vnto me, Where is the worde of the Lord? let it come now.
16.But I haue not thruſt in my ſelf for a paſtor after thee, nether haue I deſired the daye of miſerie, thou knoweſt: that which came out of my lippes, was right before thee.
17.Be not terrible vnto me: thou art mine hope in the day of aduerſitie.
18.Let them be confounded, that perſecute me, but let not me be confounded: let them be afraid, but let not me be afraid: bring vpon them the day of aduerſitie, & deſtroy them with double deſtruction.
19.Thus hathe the Lord ſaid vnto me, Go and ſtand in the gate of the children of the people, whereby ye Kings of Iudáh come in, and by the which thei go out, and in all the gates of Ieruſalém,
20.And ſay vnto them, Heare the worde of the Lord, ye Kings of Iudáh, and all Iudáh, and all the inhabitants of Ieruſalém, that entre in by theſe gates.
21.Thus ſaith the Lord, Take hede to your ſoules, and beare no burden in the Sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Ieruſalém.
22.Nether carye forthe burdẽs out of your houſes in the Sabbath day: nether do ye anie worke, but ſanctifie the Sabbath, as I commanded your fathers.
23.But they obeyed not, nether inclined their eares, but made their neckes ſtiſſe & wolde not heare, nor receiue correction.
24.Neuertheles if ye wil heare me, ſaith the Lord, & beare no burden through the gates of the citie in the Sabbath day, but ſanctifie the Sabbath day, ſo that ye do no worke therein,
25.Then ſhal the Kings and the princes entre in at the gates of this citie, and ſhal ſit vpon the throne of Dauid, and ſhal ride vpon charets, and vpon horſes, bothe thei and their princes, the men of Iudáh, and the inhabitants of Ieruſalém: and this citie ſhal remaine for euer.
26.And thei ſhal come from the cities of Iudáh, and from about Ieruſalém, and from the land of Beniamín, and from the plaine, and from the mountaines, and from ye South, which ſhal bring burnt offrings, & ſacrifices, and meat offrings, and incenſe, & ſhal bring ſacrifice of praiſe into the Houſe of the Lord.
27.But if ye wil not heare me to ſanctifie ye Sabbath daie, and not to beare a burden nor to go through the gates of Ieruſalém in ye Sabbath daie, then wil I kindle a fyre in the gates thereof, and it ſhal deuoure the palaces of Ieruſalém, and it ſhal not be quenched.

The remẽbrãce of their cõtẽpt of God can not paſſe, albeit for a time he deferre the puniſhmẽt.

In ſtead of ye Law of God, thei haue writen idolatrie & all abominations in their heart.

Your ſinnes appeare in all the altars that you haue erected to idoles.

Some read, So that their children remẽber their altars that is follow their fathers wickednes.

Zión yt was my moũtaine, ſhal now be left as a waſte field.

Becauſe thou woldeſt not giue the lãd reſt at ſuch times, dayes, & yeres as I appointed, thou ſhalt hereafter be caried away, & it ſhal reſt for lacke of laborers.

The Iewes were giuen to worldelie policies, & thought to make them ſelues ſtrong by the friendſhip of the Egyptians, Iſa. 31.3. and ſtrangers, & in the meane ſeaſon did not depẽd on God, & therefore he denounceth Gods plagues againſt them, ſhewing that they preferre corruptible man to God, which is immortal, Iſa 2.22. chap. 48.6.

Becauſe the wicked haue euer ſome excuſe to defend their doings, he ſheweth, that their owne lewde imaginations deceiue them, & bring thẽ to theſe inconueniences: but God wil examine their dedes by the malice of their hearts, 1. As the partriche by calling gathereth others, which forſake her, when they ſe that ſhe is not their dam, ſo the couetous man is forſaken of his riches, becauſe he cometh by them falſely.

Shewing that ye godlie oght to glorie in nothing, but in God: who doeth exalt his, and hathe left a ſigne of his fauour in his Temple.

Their names ſhal not be regiſtred in the boke of life:

He deſireth God to preſerue him that he fall not into tentation conſidering the great cõtempt of Gods worde, & the multitude that fall from God.

The wicked ſay yt my prophecie ſhal not come to paſſe becauſe thou deferreſt the time of thy vẽgeance.

I am aſſured of my vocatiõ, and therefore knowe that yt thing which thou ſpeakeſt by me, ſhal come to paſſe. & that I ſpeake not of any worldelie affection.

How ſoeuer ye wicked deale rigorouſly with me, yet let me finde cõfort in thee.

By naming the Sabbath day, he cõprehendeth the thing, that is thereby ſignified for if they trãſgreſſed in the ceremonie, they muſt nedes be culpable of ye reſt, read Exo. 20.8. and by ye breaking of this one commandement, he maketh them tranſgreſſors of the whole Lawe, for as muche as the firſt and ſeconde table are conteined herein.
