Jeremiah 15

1 The Lord wolde heare no prayer for the Iewes, 3 But threatneth to deſtroye them with foure plagues.
1.THẽ ſaid the Lord vnto me, Thogh Moſés and Samuél ſtode before me, yet mine affectiõ colde not be toward this people: caſt them out of my ſight, and let them departe.
2.And if they ſay vnto thee, Whether ſhal we departe? then tel them, Thus ſaith the Lord, *Suche as *are appointed *to death, vnto death: & ſuche as *are *for the ſworde, to the ſworde, & ſuche as *are *for the famine, to the famine, and ſuche as *are *for the captiuitie, to the captiuitie.
3.And I wil appointe ouer them foure kindes, ſaith the Lord, the ſworde to ſlay, and the doggs to teare in pieces, & the foules of the heauen, & the beaſtes of the earth to deuoure, and to deſtroye.
4.I wil ſcater them alſo in all kingdomes of the earth, becauſe of Manaſſéh the ſonne of Hezekiáh King of Iudáh, for that which he did in Ieruſalém.
5.Who ſhal then haue pitie vpõ thee, ô Ieruſalém? or who ſhalbe ſorie for thee? or who ſhal go to pray for thy peace?
6.Thou haſt forſaken me, ſaith the Lord, & gone backwarde: therefore wil I ſtretch out mine hand againſt thee, and deſtroye thee: for I am wearie with repenting.
7.And I wil ſcatre thẽ with the fanne in ye gates of the earth: I haue waſted, & deſtroyed my people, yet they wolde not returne from their wayes.
8.Their widdowes are increaſed by me aboue the ſand of the ſea: I haue broght vpon thẽ, & againſt the aſſemblie of the yong men a deſtroyer at none day: I haue cauſed him to fall vpon them, & the citie ſuddenly, and ſpedely.
9.She that hathe borne ſeuen, hathe bene made weake: her heart hathe failed: the ſunne hathe failed her, whiles it was day: ſhe hathe bene confounded, & aſhamed, and the reſidue of them wil I deliuer vnto the ſworde before their enemies, ſaith ye Lord.
10.Wo is me, my mother, that thou haſt borne me, a contentious man, & a mã that ſtriueth with ye whole earth: I haue nether lent on vſurie, nor mẽ haue lent vnto me on vſurie: yet euerie one doeth curſſe me.
11.The Lord ſaid, Surely thy remnãt ſhal haue welth: ſurely I wil cauſe thine enemie to intreat thee in the time of trouble, and in the time of affliction.
12.Shal the yron breake the yron, and the braſſe that commeth from the North?
13.Thy ſubſtance & thy treaſures wil I giue to be ſpoiled without gaine, and that for all thy ſinnes euen in all thy borders.
14.And I wil make thee to go with thine enemies into a lād that thou knoweſt not: for a fyre is kindled in mine angre, which ſhal burne you.
15.O Lord, thou knoweſt, remembre me, & viſit me, and reuenge me of my perſecuters: take me not awaye in the continuance of thine angre: knowe that for thy ſake I haue ſuffred rebuke.
16.Thy wordes were founde by me, and I did eat them, and thy worde was vnto me the ioye and reioycing of mine heart: for thy Name is called vpon me, ô Lord God of hoſtes.
17.I ſate not in the aſſemblie of the mockers, nether did I reioyce, but ſate alone qbecauſe of thy plague: for thou haſt filled me with indignation.
18.Why is mine heauines continual? & my plague deſperate & can not be healed? why art thou vnto me as a lyer, and as waters that faile.
19.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord, If thou returne, then wil I bring thee againe, & thou ſhalt ſtand before me: and if thou take awaye the precious from the vile, thou ſhalt be according to my worde: let them returne vnto thee, but returne not thou vnto them.
20.And I wil make thee vnto this people a ſtrong braſen wall, and thei ſhal fight againſt thee, but thei ſhal not preuaile againſt thee: for I am with thee to ſaue thee & to deliuer thee, ſaith the Lord.
21.And I wil deliuer thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I wil redeme thee out of the hand of the tyrants.

Notes

1:a.
Meaning, that if there were anie man liuing moued with ſo great zeale toward ye people, as were theſe two, yet that he wolde not grante this requeſt, foraſmuche as he had determined the contrarie, Ezek. 14, 14. Zach. 11, 9.

The doggs, birdes & beaſtes ſhulde deuoure them, yt were ſlaine.

The worde ſignifieth to rũne to & fro for feare, and vnquietnes of cõſcience, as did Kain.

Not that ye people was puniſhed for the Kings ſinne onely, but for their owne ſinnes alſo, becauſe they cõſented to his wickednes, 2. King. 21, 9.

That is, I wil not call backe my plagues, or ſpare thee anie more.

Becauſe I had ſlaine their houſbands.

She that had manie, loſt all her children.

She was deſtroyed in the middes of her proſperitie.

Theſe are ye Prophets wordes, cõplaining of ye obſtinacie of ye people, & that he was reſerued to ſo wicked a time wherein alſo he ſheweth what is the cõdition of Gods miniſters: to wit, to haue all the worlde againſt thẽ, thogh thei giue none occaſion.

Which is an occaſion of cõtention and hatred.

In this perplexitie the Lord cõforted me, & ſaid yt my laſt dayes ſhulde be quiet: & by ye enemie he meaneth here, Nebuzardán the captaine of Nebuchadnezzar, who gaue Ieremiáh ye choiſe ether to remaine in his countrey, or to go whither he wolde: or by the enemie he meaneth the Iewes, wc ſhulde afterward knowe Ieremiáhs fidelitie, and therefore fauour him.

As for the people thogh they ſemed ſtrong as yron, yet inulde thei not be able to reſiſt ye hard yron of Babylon, but ſhuld be led captiues

He ſpeaketh not this for deſire of reuegeace, but wiſhīg ye God wolde deliuer his Church of thē whome he knewe to be hardened and incorrigible

I had nothīg ado with the wicked cōtempers of thy worde, but lamented bitterly for thy plagues ſhewing what the faithful ſhulde do whē thei ſe to kens of Gods angre

And haſt not aſsiſted me according to thy promes? whereī appeareth, ye in the Saints of God is imperfe&iō of faith, w through impaciēce is oft times aſſailed as Chap 20,7

If thou forget theſe carnal conſideratiōs, & faithfully execute thy charge

That is, ſeke to winne the good from the bad

To wit, as my mouth hathe pronoūced Chap 1, 18, & as here followeth verſ 20

Cōforme not thy ſelf to their wickednes, but let them followe thy godlie exāple

I wil arme thee w an inuicible ſtrēgth & cōſtancie, ſo that all the powers of the worlde ſhal not ouercome thee
