Jeremiah 14

1 Of the dearth that ſhulde come. 7 The prayer of the people aſking mercie of the Lord. 10 The vnfaithful people are not heard. 12 Of prayer, faſting, and of falſe prophetes that ſeduce the people.
1.The worde of the Lord that came vnto Ieremiáh, concerning the  dearth.
2.Iudáh hathe mourned, and the gates thereof are deſolate, they haue bene broght to heauines vnto the grounde, and the crye of Ieruſalém goeth vp,
3.And their nobles haue ſent their inferiours to the water, who came to the welles, and founde no water: they returned with their veſſels emptie: they were aſhamed & confounded, and couered their heads.
4.For the grounde was deſtroyed, becauſe there was no raine in the earth: the plowmen were aſhamed, and couered their heads.
5.Yea, the hinde alſo calued in the field, and forſoke it, becauſe there was no graſſe.
6.And the wilde aſſes did ſtãd in the high places, and drewe in their winde like dragons: their eyes did faile, becauſe there was no graſſe.
7.O Lord, thogh our iniquities teſtifie againſt vs, deale with vs according to thy Name: for our rebellions are manie, we ſinned againſt thee.
8.O the hope of Iſraél, the ſauiour thereof in the time of trouble, why art thou as a ſtranger in the lãd, as one that paſſeth by to tarie for a night?
9.Why art thou as a man aſtonied, and as a ſtrong man that can not helpe? yet thou, ô Lord, art in the middes of vs, and thy Name is called vpon vs: forſake vs not.
10.Thus ſaith the Lord vnto this people, Thus haue they delited to wãdre: they haue not refrained their fete, therefore the Lord hathe no delite in thẽ: but he wil now remember their iniquitie, and viſit their ſinnes.
11.Then ſaid the Lord vnto me, Thou ſhalt not praye to do this people good.
12.Whẽ they faſt, I wil not heare their crye, and when they offer burnt offring, and an oblation, I wil not accept them: but I wil conſume them by the ſworde, and by the famine and by the peſtilence.
13.Then anſwered I, Ah Lord God, beholde, the Prophetes ſay vnto them, Ye ſhal not ſe the ſworde, nether ſhal famine come vpon you, but I wil giue you aſſured peace in this place.
14.Then the Lord ſaid vnto me, The Prophetes prophecie lies in my Name: I haue not ſent them, nether did I commande them, nether ſpake I vnto them, but they prophecie vnto you a falſe viſion, and diuination, and vanitie, and deceitfulnes of their owne heart.
15.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord, Concerning the Prophetes that prophecie in my Name, whome I haue not ſent, yet they ſay, Sworde and famine ſhal not be in this land, by ſworde & famine ſhal thoſe Prophetes be conſumed.
16.And the people to whome theſe Prophetes do prophecie, ſhalbe caſt out in the ſtretes of Ieruſalém, becauſe of the famine, & the ſworde, & there ſhalbe none to burye them, bothe they, and their wiues, and their ſonnes, & their daughters: for I wil powre their wickednes vpon them.
17.Therefore thou ſhalt ſay this worde vnto them, Let mine eyes drop downe teares night and day without ceaſing: for ye virgine daughter of my people is deſtroyed with a great deſtruction, and with a ſore grieuous plague.
18.For if I go into the field, beholde the ſlaine with the ſworde: and if I entre into the citie, beholde thẽ that are ſicke for hunger alſo: moreouer the Prophet alſo and the Prieſt go a wandring minto a land that they know not.
19.Haſt thou vtterly reiected Iudáh, or hathe thy ſoule abhorred Zión? Why haſt thou ſmitten vs, that we can not be healed? We loked for peace, & there is no good, & for the time of health, & beholde trouble.
20.We acknowledge, ô Lord, our wickednes, & the iniquitie of our fathers: for we haue ſinned againſt thee.
21.Do not abhorre vs for thy Names ſake caſt not downe the throne of thy glorie: remember and breake not thy couenant with vs.
22.Are there anie among ye vanities of the Gentiles, that can giue raine? or can the heauẽs giue ſhowers? is it not thou, ô Lord our God! therefore we wil waite vpõ thee: for thou haſt made all theſe things.

The worde ſignifieth to be made blacke, and ſo is here taken for extreme ſorowe.

To wit, with aſhes in token of ſorowe.

Meaning, ye brute beaſts for drought were compelled to forſake their yong, cótrarie to nature, & to go ſeke water, which they colde not finde.
6:e.
Which are ſo hote of nature, that thei can not be couled with drinking of water, but ſtil gape for the aire to refreſh them.

He ſheweth the onely way to remedie Gods plagues, which is by vnfained confeſsion of our ſinnes, and returning to him by repétáce.

The falſe prophets promiſed peace, & aſſurãce, but Ieremiáh calleth to teares, and repentance for their affliction, wc is at hand, as Chap. 9, 1. lament. 1, 16 & 2, 18.

Thogh the Prophet knew that God had caſt of ye multitude, which were hypocrites, and baſtard children, yet he was aſſured that for his promes ſake he wolde haue a Church, for the which he prayeth.

He teacheth the Church a forme of prayer, to humble theſelues to God by true repentance, wc is the onelie meane to auoide this famine, wc was the beginning of Gods plagues.
