Jeremiah 13

The deſtruction of the Iewes is prefigured 11 Why Iſraél was receiued to be the people of God, and why they were forſaken 15 He exhorteth them to repentance.
1.THus ſaith the Lord vnto me, Go, and bye thee a linen girdle, and put it vpon thy loynes, and put it not in water.
2.So I boght the girdle according to the commandement of the Lord, and put it vpon my loynes.
3.And the worde of the Lord came vnto me the ſeconde time, ſaying,
4.Take the girdle that thou haſt boght, which is vpon thy loynes, and ariſe, go toward Peráth, and hide it there in the cleft of the rocke.
5.So I went, & hid it by Peráth, as the Lord had commanded me.
6.And after many daies, the Lord ſaid vnto me, Ariſe, go toward Peráth, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.
7.Then wét I to Peráth, and digged, & toke the girdle from the place where I had hid it, & beholde, the girdle was corrupt, and was profitable for nothing.
8.Then the worde of the Lord came vnto me, ſaying,
9.Thus faith the Lord, After this maner wil I deſtroye the pride of Iudáh, & the great pride of Ieruſalém.
10.This wicked people haue refuſed to heare my worde, & walke after the ſtubbernes of their owne heart, and walke after other gods to ſerue them, and to worſhip them: therefore they ſhalbe as this girdle, which is profitable to nothing.
11.For as the girdle cleaueth to the loines of a man, ſo haue I tyed to me the whole houſe of Iſraél, and the whole houſe of Iudáh, faith the Lord, that thei might be my people: that they might haue a name and praiſe, and glorie, but thei wolde not heare!
12.Therefore thou ſhalt ſaie vnto them this worde, Thus faith ye Lord God of Iſraél, Euerie bottel ſhalbe filled with wine, and thei ſhal ſaie vnto thee, Do we not knowe that euerie bottle ſhalbe filled with wine?
13.Then ſhalt thou ſaie vnto them, Thus faith the Lord, Beholde, I wil fil all the inhabitants of this land, euen the Kings that ſit vpon the throne of Dauid, and the Prieſts and the Prophetes, and all the inhabitants of Ieruſalém with drunkénes.
14.And I wil daſh them one againſt anouther, euen the fathers and the ſonnes together, faith the Lord: I wil not ſpare, I wil not pitie nor haue compaſſió, but deſtroie them.
15.Heare and giue eare, be not proude: for the Lord hathe ſpoken it.
16.Giue glorie to ye Lord your God before he bring darkenes, and or euer your fete ſtumble in the darke mountaines, and whiles you loke for light, he turne it into the ſhadowe of death and make it as darkenes.
17.But if ye wil not heare this, my ſoule ſhal wepe in ſecret for your pride, & mine eye ſhal wepe and drop downe teares, becauſe the Lords flocke is caried awaie captiue.
18.Saie vnto the King and to the Queene, Humble your ſelues, ſit downe, for the crowne of your glorie ſhal come downe from your heads.
19.The cities of the South ſhalbe ſhut vp, and no man ſhal open them: all Iudáh ſhal be caried awaie captiue: it ſhalbe wholy caried awaie captiue.
20.Lift vp your eyes and beholde them yt come from the North, where is ye flocke yt was giué thee, euen thy beautiful flocke.
21.What wilt thou ſaie, when he ſhal viſit thee? (for thou haſt taught thé to be capitaines & as chief ouer thee) ſhal not ſorow take thee as a woman in trauail?
22.And if thou ſaie in thine heart, Wherefore come theſe things vpon me? For the multitude of thine iniquities are thy ſkirts diſcouered & thy heles made bare.
23.Can the blacke More change his ſkin? or the leopard his ſpottes? then maie ye alſo do good, that are accuſtomed to do euil.
24.Therefore wil I ſcatre thé, as the ſtubble that is taken awaie with the South winde.
25.This is thy portion, and the parte of thy meaſures from me, ſaith the Lord, becauſe thou haſt forgoten me and truſted in lies.
26.Therefore I haue alſo diſcouered thy ſkirts vpon thy face, that thy ſhame may appeare.
27.I haue ſene thine adulteries, & thy neyings, ye filthines of thy whoredome on the hilles in the fields, and thine abominatiós. Wo vnto thee, ô Ieruſalém: wilt thou not be made cleane? when ſhal it once be?

Notes

4:a.
Becauſe this riuer Peráth or Euphrates was farre frõ Ieruſalém, it is euidẽt, that this was a viſion, whereby was ſignified that the Iewes ſhulde paſſe ouer Euphrates to be captiues in Babylon & there for length of time ſhulde ſeme to be rottẽ: althogh they were ioyned to the Lord before as a girdle about a man.
12:b.
Euerie one of you ſhalbe filled with ſpiritual drunkenes, and be without all knowledge to ſeke how to helpe your ſelues.
14:c.
It ſhalbe as eaſie for me to deſtroye ye greateſt, and ye ſtrongeſt, as it is for a man to breake earthé bottels.
16:d.
That is, affliction & miſerie by the Babylonians, Iſa 8,22
16:e.
Meaning, for helpe and ſupport of the Egyptians.
17:f.
You ſhal ſurely be led away captiue & I, according to mine affection toward you, ſhal wepe, and lamét for your ſtubbernes.
18:g.
For Iehoiachin, & his mother rendred them ſelues by Ieremiahs counſel to the King of Babylon, 2 King. 24,12.

That is, of Iudáh wc lieth Southward fró Babylon.
20:i.
He aſketh ye King, where his people is become.
21:k.
By ſeking to ſtrágers for helpe thou haſt made thé ſkilful to fight againſt thee.
22:l.
I Thy cloke of hypocriſie ſhal be pulled of and thy ſhame ſene.
26:m.
As thine iniquities haue bene manifeſt to all the worlde: ſo ſhal thy ſhame, & puniſhment.
27:n.
He compareth idolaters to horſes inflamed after mares.
27:o.
There is no place ſo hie nor lo, where as the markes and ſignes of thine idolatria appeare not.
