Exodus 5

1 Moſés and Aarón do their meſſage to Pharaoh, who letteth not the people of Iſraél departe but oppreſſeth them more and more 20 They crye out vpon Moſés & Aarón therefore, and Moſés complaineth to God.
1.THen afterward Moſés & Aarón went & ſaid to a Pharaoh, Thus faith the Lord God of Iſraél, Let my people go, that they maie b celebrate a feaſt vnto me in the wildernes.
2.And Pharaoh ſaid, Who is the Lord, yͤ I ſhulde heare his voyce, & let Iſraél go? I knowe not the Lord, nether wil I let Iſraél go.
3.And they ſaid, " We worſhip the God of yͤ Ebrewes: we pray thee, ſuffre vs to go thre daies iournei in the deſert and to ſacrifice vnto the Lord our God, left " he bring vpon vs the peſtilence or ſworde.
4.The ſaid the King of Egypt vnto them, Moſés and Aarón, why cauſe ye the people to ceaſe from their workes? get you to your burdens.
5.Pharaoh ſaid furthermore, Beholde, muche people c is now in the land, & ye make them leaue their burdens.
6.Therefore Pharaoh gaue commādement the ſame day vnto the taſkemaſters of the people, and to their d officers, ſaying,
7.Ye ſhal giue the people no more ſtrawe, to make bricke (as in time paſt) but let them go and gather them ſtrawe them ſelues:
8.Notwithſtanding lay vpon them the nōbre of bricke, which they made in time paſt, diminiſh nothing thereof: for they be idle, therefore thei crye, ſaying, Let vs go to offre ſacrifice vnto our God.
9.e Lay more worke vpon the men, and cauſe them to do it, and let them not regarde f vaine wordes.
10.¶ Then went the taſkemaſters of yͤ people, & their officers out, and tolde the people, ſaying, Thus ſaith Pharaoh, I wil giue you no more ſtraw.
11.Go your ſelues, get you ſtraw where ye can finde it, yet ſhal nothing of your labour be diminiſhed.
12.Then were the people ſcatred abrode throughout all the land of Egypt, for to gather ſtubble in ſtede of ſtraw.
13.And the taſkemaſters haſted thē, ſaying, Finiſh your dayes worke " euerie dayes taſke, as ye did when ye had ſtraw.
14.And the officers of the children of Iſraél, which Pharaohs taſkemaſters had ſet ouer them, were beaten, and demanded, Wherfore haue ye not fulfilled your taſke in making bricke yeſterday and to day, as in times paſt?
15.¶ Then the officers of the childré of Iſraél came, & cryed vnto Pharaoh, ſayīg, Wherefore dealeſt thou thus with thy ſeruants?
16.There is no ſtraw giuen to thy ſeruants, and they ſay vnto vs, Make bricke: and lo, thy ſeruants are beaten, and " thy people is blamed.
17.But he ſaid, " Ye are to muche idle: therefore ye ſay, Let vs go to offre ſacrifice to the Lord.
18.Go therefore now & worke: for there ſhal no ſtraw be giuen you, yet ſhal ye deliuer the whole tale of bricke.
19.Then the officers of the children of Iſraél ſawe thē ſelues in an euil caſe, becauſe " it was ſaid, Ye ſhal diminiſh nothing of your bricke, nor of euerie daies taſke,
20.¶ And they met Moſés & Aarón, which ſtode in their way as they came out from Pharaoh,
21.To whome they ſaid, The Lord loke vpon you and iudge: for ye haue made our ſauour to * ſtincke before Pharaoh & before his ſeruants, in that ye haue g put a ſworde in their hand to ſlay vs.
22.Wherefore Moſés returned to yͤ Lord, and ſaid, Lord, why haſt thou afflicted this people? wherefore haſt thou thus ſent me?
23.For ſince I came to Pharaoh to ſpeake in thy Name, he hathe vexed this people, and yet thou haſt not deliuered thy people.
