Exodus 33

2 The Lord promiſeth to ſend an Angel before his people. 4 They are ſad becauſe the Lord demeth to go vp with them 9 Moſes talketh familiarly with God 13 He praieth for the people, 18 And deſireth to ſe the glorie of the Lord.
1.AFterwarde the Lord ſaid vnto Moſes, Departe, a go vp frõ hence, thou, and the people (which thou haſt broght vp out of the land of Egypt) vnto the lãd w I ſware vnto Abrahám, to Izhák and to Iaakób, ſayĩg, * Vnto thy ſede wil I giue it.
2.And * I wil ſend an Angel before thee & wil caſt out the Canaanites, ye Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebuſites:
3.To a lãd, I ſay, that floweth with milke & hony : for I wil not go vp with thee, * becauſe thou art a ſtifnecked people, leſt I conſume thee in the way.
4.And when the people heard this euil tidings, they ſorowed, & no man put on his beſt rayment.
5.(For the Lord had ſaid to Moſes, Say vnto the children of Iſraél, Ye are a ſtifnecked people, I will come ſodenly vpon thee, and conſume thee: therefore now put thy coſtly rayment frõ thee, that I may knowe b what to do vnto thee)
6.So the childrẽ of Iſraél laied their good rayment from them, after Moſes came downe from the mount Horéb.
7.Then Moſes toke his tabernacle, & pitched it without the hoſte far of from the hoſte, and called it c Ohel-moéd. And when anie did ſeke to the Lord, he wẽt out vnto the Tabernacle of the Congregacion, which was without the hoſte.
8.And when Moſes went out vnto the Tabernacle, all the people roſe vp, and ſtode euerie man at his tent dore, and loked after Moſes, vntil he was gone into the Tabernacle.
9.And aſſone as Moſes was entred into the Tabernacle, the cloudy piller deſcended and ſtode at the dore of the Tabernacle, and the Lord talked with Moſes.
10.Now when all the people ſawe the cloudy piller ſtand at the Tabernacle dore, all the people roſe vp, & worſhipped euerie man in his tent dore.
11.And the Lord ſpake vnto Moſes, d face to face, as a man ſpeaketh vnto his friend. After he turned againe into the hoſte, but his ſeruant Ioſhúa the ſonne of Nun a yong man, departed not out of the Tabernacle.
12.¶ Then Moſes ſaid vnto the Lord, Se, ye ſaieſt vnto me, Lead this people fourth, & thou haſt not ſhewed me whome thou wilt ſend with me : thou haſt ſaid moreouer, I knowe thee by e name, & thou haſt alſo founde grace in my ſight.
13.Now therefore, I pray thee, if I haue founde fauour in thy ſight, ſhewe me now thy way, that I may knowe thee, and that I may finde grace in thy ſight: conſider alſo that this nacion is thy people.
14.And he anſwered, My f preſence ſhal go with thee, and I wil giue thee reſt.
15.Then he ſaid vnto him, If thy preſence go not with vs, cary vs not hence.
16.And wherein now ſhal it be knowẽ, that I and thy people haue founde fauour in thy ſight ? ſhal it not be when thou goeſt with vs ? ſo I, & thy people ſhal haue preeminence before all the people that are vpon the earth.
17.And the Lord ſaid vnto Moſes, I wil do this alſo that thou haſt ſaid: for thou haſt founde grace in my ſight, and I knowe thee by name.
18.Againe he ſaid, I beſeche thee, ſhewe me thy g glorie.
19.And he anſwered, I wil make all my h good go before thee, and I wil proclai-me the i Name of the Lord before thee: * for I wil ſhewe k mercie to whome I wil ſhewe mercie, & wil haue compaſsion on whome I wil haue compaſsion.
20.Furthermore he ſaid, Thou cãſt not ſe my face, for there ſhal no man ſe me, and l liue.
21.Alſo the Lord ſaid, Beholde, there is a place by m me, and thou ſhalt ſtãde vpon the rocke:
22.And while my glorie paſſeth by, I wil put thee in a cleft of the rocke, and wil couer thee with mine hand whiles I paſſe by.
23.After I wil take away mine hand, & thou ſhalt ſe my n backepartes : but my face ſhal not be ſene.
