Exodus 32

4 The Iſraelites impute their deliuerance to the calf. 11 God is appeaſed by Moſes prayer 19 Moſes breaketh the Tables 27 He ſlayeth the idolaters. 32 Moſes zeale for the people.
1.BVt when the people ſawe, that Moſés taried lõg or he came downe from yͤ mõutaine, the people gathered thẽ ſelues together againſt Aarón, & ſaid vnto him, Vp, a make vs gods to go before vs: for of this Moſés (the man that broght vs out of the land of Egypt) we knowe not what is become of him.
2.And Aarón ſaid vnto them, b Plucke of the golden earings, which are in the eares of your wiues, of your ſonnes, and of your daughters, and bring them vnto me.
3.Then all the people pluckte from the c ſelues the golden earings, which were in their eares, and they broght them vnto Aarón.
4.* Who receiued them at their hands, and facioned it with the grauing tole, & made of it a d molten calf: then they ſaid, * Theſe be thy gods, ô Iſraél, ŵ broght thee out of the land of Egypt.
5.When Aarón ſawe that, he made an altar before it: and Aarón proclaimed, ſaying, To morowe ſhalbe the holy day of the Lord.
6.So they roſe vp the next day in the morning, and offred burnt offrings, & broght peace offrings: alſo * the people ſate them downe to eat and drinke, and roſe vp to playe.
7.¶ Then the Lord ſaid vnto Moſés, * Go, get the downe: for thy people which thou haſt broght out of the lãd of Egypt, hathe corrupted their waies.
8.Thei e are ſone turned out of the way, which I commanded them: for thei haue made them a molte calf, & haue worſhipped it, & haue offred thercto, ſayĩg, * Theſe be thy gods, ô Iſraél, which haue broght thee out of the land of Egypt.
9.Againe the Lord ſaid vnto Moſés, * I haue ſene this people, and beholde, it is a ſtifnecked people.
10.Nowe f therefore let me alone, that my wrath may waxe hote againſt them, for I wil conſume them: but I wil make of thee a mightie people.
11.But Moſés praied vnto ŷ Lord his God, and ſaid, O Lord, why doeth thy wrath waxe hote againſt thy people, which thou haſt broght out of the lãd of Egypt, with great power and with a mightie hand?
12.* Wherefore ſhal the Egyptians ſpeake, and ſay, He hathe broght them out maliciouſly for to ſlay them in the moũtaines, and to conſume them from the earth? turne from thy fearce wrath, and change thy minde from this euil toward thy people.
13.Remembre g Abrahám, Izhák, & Iſraél thy ſeruants, to whome thou ſwareſt by thine owne ſelfe, and ſaideſt vnto them, * I wil multiplie your ſede, as the ſtarres of the heauen, and all this land, that I haue ſpoken of, wil I giue vnto your ſede, and they ſhal inherit it for euer.
14.Then the Lord changed his minde from the euil, which he threatened to do vnto his people.
15.So Moſés returned and went downe from the mountaine with the two Tables of the Teſtimonie in his hãd: the Tables were writtẽ on bothe their ſides, euen on ŷ one ſide & on the other were thei written.
16.And theſe Tables were the worke of God, and h this writing was the writing of God grauen in the Tables.
17.And whe Ioſhúa heard the noiſe of the people, as thei ſhowted, he ſaid vnto Moſés, There is a noiſe of warre in the hoſte.
18.Who anſwered, It is not the noiſe of thẽ that haue the victorie, nor the noiſe of thẽ that are ouercome: but I do heare the noiſe of ſinging.
19.Nowe, aſſone as he came nere vnto the hoſte, he ſawe the calf and the dancing: ſo Moſés wrath waxed hote, and he caſt the Tables out of his hands, and brake them in pieces beneth the mountaine.
20.* After, he toke the calf, which they had made, & burned it in the fire, and ground it vnto powder, and ſtrowed it vpon the water, & made the childrē of Iſraél i drin-ke of it.
21.Alſo Moſés ſaid vnto Aarón, What did this people vnto thee, ŷ thou haſt broght ſo great a ſinne vpon them?
22.The Aarón anſwered, Let not the wrath of my lord waxe fearce: thou knoweſt this people, that thei are euen ſet on miſchief.
23.And thei ſaid vnto me, Make vs gods to go before vs: for we knowe not what is become of this Moſés (the man ŷ broght vs out of the land of Egypt.)
24.Thẽ I ſaid to them, Ye that haue golde, plucke it of: and thei broght it me, and I did caſt it into the fire, and thereof came this calf.
25.Moſés therefore ſawe that the people were k naked (for Aarón had made them naked vnto their ſhame among their ene-mies)
26.And Moſés ſtode in the gate of the cãp, and ſaid, Who pertaineth to the Lord? let him come to me. And all the ſonnes of Leuí gathered them ſelues vnto him.
27.Then he ſaid vnto them, Thus ſaith the Lord God of Iſraél, Put euerie man his ſworde by his side: go to and fro, fro gate to gate, through the hoſte, and l ſlay eue-rie man his brother, and euerie man his companion, & euerie man his neighbour.
28.So the children of Leuí did as Moſés had commanded: and there fel of the peo-ple the ſame day about thre thouſand mẽ.
29.(For Moſés had ſaid, Conſecrat your hands vnto the Lord this day, euen euerie man vpon his m ſonne, and vpon his bro-ther, that there may be giuen you a bleſ-ſing this day)
30.And whe the morning came, Moſés ſaid vnto the people, Ye haue cõmitted a grie-uous crime: but now I wil go vp to the Lord, if I may pacifie him for your ſinne.
31.Moſés therefore went againe vnto the Lord, and ſaid, Oh, this people haue ſin- ned a great ſinne and haue made thẽ gods of golde.
32.Therefore now if thou pardone their ſinne, thy mercie ſhal appeare : but if thou wilt not, I pray thee, raſe me n out of thy o boke, which thou haſt written.
33.Then the Lord ſaid to Moſes, Whoſoeuer hathe ſinned againſt me, I wil put him out of my boke.
34.Go now therefore, bring the people vnto the place which I commanded thee: beholde, mine Angel ſhal go before thee, but yet in the day of my viſitacion I wil p viſit their ſinne vpon them.
35.So the Lord plagued the people, becauſe they cauſed Aaron to make the calf which he made.
