Exodus 14

4.8 Pharaohs heart is hardened, and purſueth the Iſraelites 11 The Iſraelites ſtriken with feare murmure againſt Moſés. 21 He deuideth the Sea. 23.27 The Egyptians followe and are drowned.
1.THen the Lord ſpake vnto Moſés, ſaying,
2.Speake to the children of Iſraél, that thei a returne & campe before b Pi-hahiróth, betwene Migdól and yͤ Sea, ouer againſt * Baal-zephón: about it ſhal ye campe by the Sea.
3.For Pharaóh wil ſay of the children of Iſraél, Thei are tangled in the land: the wildernes hathe ſhut them in.
4.And I wil harden Pharaohs heart that he ſhal follow after you: ſo I wil c get me honour vpon Pharaóh, and vpon all his hoſte: the Egyptians alſo ſhal knowe that I am the Lord: and thei did ſo.
5.¶ Then it was tolde the King of Egypt, that the people fled: & the heart of Pharaóh & of his ſeruants was turned againſt the people, and they ſaid, Why haue we this done, & haue let Iſraél go out of our ſeruice?
6.And he made ready his charets, & toke his people with him,
7.And toke ſix hundreth choſen charets, & d all the charets of Egypt, and captaines ouer euerie one of them.
8.(For the Lord had hardened the heart of Pharaóh King of Egypt, and he followed after the children of Iſraél: but the children of Iſraél went out with an e hye hād)
9.* And the Egyptians purſued after thē, & all the horſes and charets of Pharaóh, & his horſemen & his hoſte ouertoke them camping by the Sea, beſide Pi-hahiróth, before Baal-zephón.
10.And when Pharaoh drewe nie, the children of Iſraél lift vp their eies, and beholde, the Egyptians marched afther thē, and they were ſore f afraied: wherefore the children of Iſraél cryed vnto the Lord.
11.And thei ſaid vnto Moſés, Haſt thou broght vs to dye in the wildernes, becauſe there were no graues in Egypt? wherefore haſt thou ſerued vs thus, to cary vs out of Egypt?
12.Did not we tel thee this thing in Egypt, ſaying, Let g vs be in reſt, that we may ſerue the Egyptians? for it had bene better for vs to ſerue the Egyptians, thē that we ſhulde dye in the wildernes.
13.Then Moſés ſaid to the people, Feare ye not, ſtand ſtil, and beholde " the ſaluacion of the Lord which he wil ſhewe to you this day. For the Egyptians, whome ye haue ſene this day, ye ſhal neuer ſe them againe.
14.The Lord ſhal fight for you : therefore h holde you your peace.
15.¶ And the Lord ſaid vnto Moſés, Wherefore i cryeſt thou vnto me? ſpeake vnto the children of Iſraél that thei go forwarde:
16.And lift thou vp thy rod, & ſtretch out thine hand vpon the Sea & deuide it, and let the childrē of Iſraél go on drye groūde through the middes of the Sea.
17.And I, beholde I wil harden the heart of the Egyptians that thei may followe thē, and I wil get me honour vpon Pharaoh, & vpon all his hoſte, vpon his charets, & vpon his horſemen.
18.Then the Egyptians ſhal knowe that I am the Lord, when I haue gotten me honour vpon Pharaoh, vpon his charets, & vpon his horſemen.
19.(And the Angel of God, which went before the hoſte of Iſraél, remoued & went behinde them: alſo the piller of the cloude went from before them, and ſtode behinde them,
20.And came betwene the campe of the Egyptians and the campe of Iſraél: it was bothe a cloude and darckenes, yet gaue it k light by night, ſo that all the night lōg the one came not at the other)
21.And Moſés ſtretched forthe his hād vpon the Sea, and the Lord cauſed the Sea to runne backe by a ſtrong Eaſt winde all the night, and made the Sea drye land: for the waters were * deuided.
22.The * children of Iſraél wēt through the middes of the Sea vpon the drye grounde, and the waters were a wall vnto them on the right hand, and on their left hand.
23.And the Egyptians purſued and went after them to the middes of the Sea, euen all Pharaohs horſes, his charets, and his horſemen.
24.Now in the morning l watche, whē the Lord loked vnto the hoſte of the Egyptians, out of the firy and cloudy piller, he ſtroke the hoſte of the Egyptians with feare.
25.For he toke of their charet wheles, and thei draue them with " muche a do: ſo that the Egyptiās euerie one ſaid, I wil flee frō the face of Iſraél: for the Lord fighteth for them againſt the Egyptians.
26.¶ Then the Lord ſaid to Moſés, Stretch thine hand vpon the Sea, that the waters may returne vpon the Egyptians, vpon their charets and vpon their horſemen.
27.Then Moſés ſtretched forthe his hand vpon the Sea, and the Sea returned to his force early in the morning, & the Egyptians fled againſt it: but the Lord m ouerthrewe the Egyptiãs in the middes of the Sea.
28.So the water returned & couered yͤ charets and the horſemen, euen all the hoſte of Pharaóh that came into the Sea after thé: there remained not one of them.
29.But the children of Iſraél walked vpon drye land through the middes of the Sea, and the waters were a wall vnto them on their right hand, & on their left.
30.Thus yͤ Lord ſaued Iſraél the ſame day out of the hand of the Egyptians & Iſraél ſawe yͤ Egyptiãs dead vpõ yͤ Sea bãcke.
31.And Iſraél ſawe yͤ mighty " power, which the Lord ſhewed vpon the Egyptians: ſo the people feared the Lord and beleued yͤ Lord, and his " ſeruant Moſés.

Thei, which a litle before in their deliuerance reioyced, being now in danger are afraied & murmure. In this figure foure chief points are to be considered. firſt that the Church of God is euer ſubiect in this worlde to the Croſſe & to be afflicted after one ſort or other. The ſecond, that the miniſters of God following their vocation ſhalbe euil ſpoken of, and murmured againſt, euen of them that pretend the ſame cauſe and religion that thei do. The third, that God deliuereth not his Church incontinently out of dangers, but to exerciſe their faith and pacience continueth their troubles, yea and often tymes augmēteth them as the Iſraelites were now in leſſe hope of their liues then when thei were in Egypt. The fourth point is, that when the dangers are moſte great, then Gods helpe is moſte ready to ſuccour: for the Iſraelites had on ether ſide thē, huge rockes & mountaines, before them the Sea, behinde them moſte cruel ennemies, ſo that there was no way left to eſcape to mans iudgement.
