Genesis 38

The mariage of Iudáh 29 The treſpaſſe of Er and Onán, and the vengeance of God that came therevpō. 18 Iudáh lyeth with his daughter in lawe Tamar. 29.30 The birth of Phárez and Zárah.
1.ANd at that time a Iudáh went downe from his brethren, and turned in to a man called Hiráh an Adullamite.
2.And Iudáh ſawe there the daughter of a man called * Shuáh a b Canaanite : and he toke her to wife, and went in vnto her.
3.So ſhe conceiued and bare a ſonne, & he called his name Er.
4.* And ſhe conceiued againe, and bare a ſonne, and ſhe called his name Onán.
5.Moreouer ſhe bare yet a ſonne, whome ſhe called Sheláh : and Iudáh was at Che-zíb when ſhe bare him.
6.Thé Iudáh toke a wife to Er his firſt borne ſonne whoſe name was Tamár.
7.* Now Er yͤ firſt borne of Iudáh was wicked in the ſight of the Lord. therefore the Lord ſlewe him.
8.Then Iudáh ſaid to Onán, Go in vnto thy brothers wife, and do the office of a kinſman vnto her, & raiſe c vp ſede vnto thy brother.
9.And Onán knewe yͤ the ſede ſhulde not be his: therefore when he wēt in vnto his brothers wife, he ſpilled it on the groūde, left he ſhulde giue ſede vnto his brother.
10.And it was wicked in the eyes of yͤ Lord, which he did: wher fore he ſlewe hī alſo.
11.Then ſaid Iudáh to Tamar his daughter in lawe, d Remaine a widowe in thy fathers houſe, til Sheláh my ſonne growe vp ( for he thoght thus, Leſt he die aſwel as his brethren ) So Tamár went & dwelt in her fathers houſe.
12.¶ And in proceſſe of time alſo the daughter of Shuáh Iudahs wife dyed. Then Iudáh, when he " had left mourning, went vp to his ſhepe ſherers to Timnáh, he, and his neighbour Hiráh the Adullamite.
13.And it was tolde Tamár, ſaying, Beholde, thy father in lawe goeth vp to Timnáh, to ſhere his ſhepe.
14.Then ſhe put her widowes garmentes of from her, & couered her with a vaile, and wrapped her ſelfe, & ſate downe in " Petháh-enáim, w̄ is by the way to Timnáh, becauſe ſhe ſawe yͤ Sheláh was growen, & ſhe was not giuē vnto him to wife.
15.When Iudáh ſawe her, he iudged her an whore: for ſhe had couered her face.
16.And he turned to the way, towards her, & ſaid, Come, I pray thee, let me lye with thee . (for he e knewe not that ſhe was his daughter in lawe ) And ſhe anſwered, What wilt thou giue me for to lie w̄ me?
17.Then ſaid he, I wil ſend thee a kid of yͤ goates from the flocke. & ſhe ſaid, Wel, if thou wilt giue me a pledge, til yͤ ſend it.
18.Then he ſaid, What is the pledge that I ſhal giue thee ? And ſhe anſwered, Thy ſignet, & thy " cloke, and thy ſtaffe that is in thine hand. So he gaue it her, and lay by her, and ſhe was with childe by him.
19.Then ſhe roſe, and went & put her vaile frō her & put on her widowes raymēt.
20.Afterward Iudáh ſent a kid of the goates by the hād of his f neighbour yͤ Adullamite, for to receiue his pledge from the womans hand: but he founde her not.
21.Then aſked he the mē of that place, ſaying, Where is yͤ whore, that ſate in Enáim by yͤ way ſide? And they anſwered, There was no whore here.
22.He came therefore to Iudáh againe, & ſaid, I cā not finde her, & alſo the mē of yͤ place ſaid, There was no whore there.
23.Then Iudáh ſaid, Let her take it to her, leſt we be " g ſhamed : beholde, I ſent this kid, and thou haſt not founde her.
24.¶ Now after thre moneths, one tolde Iudáh, ſaying, Tamár thy daughter in lawe hathe played the whore, and lo, with playing the whore, ſhe is great with childe. Then Iudáh ſaid, Bring ye her forthe and let her be h burnt.
25.When ſhe was broght forthe, ſhe ſent to her father in law, ſaying, By the man, vnto whome theſe thīgs perteine, am I with child : & ſaid alſo, Loke. I praye thee, whoſe theſe are, the ſeale, & yͤ cloke, and yͤ ſtaffe.
26.Then Iudáh knewe them, and ſaid, She is i more righteous thé I : for ſhe hath done it becauſe I gaue her not to Sheláh my ſonne. So he laye with her k no more.
27.¶ Now whē the time was come that ſhe ſhulde be deliuered, beholde, there were twinnes in her wombe.
28.And when ſhe was in trauel, the one put out his hand : & the midwife toke and bounde a red threde about his hand, ſaying, This is come out firſt.
29.But when he l plucked his hād backe againe, lo, his brother came out, & the midwife ſaid, How haſt m thou broken the breache vpō thee? & his name was called * Phárez.
30.And afterwarde came out his brother yͤ had the red threde about his hand, and his name was called Zárah.
