Genesis 12

1 Abrám by Gods commandement goeth to Canáan. 3 Chriſt is promiſed. 7 Abram buyldeth altars for exerciſe and declaration of his faith among the infideles. 10 Becauſe of the derthe he goeth into Egypt. 15 Pharaoh taketh his wife, and is puniſhed.
1.FOr the Lord had ſaid vnto Abrám, * Get thee out of thy countrey, and frō thy kindred, and frō thy fathers houſe vnto b the land that I wil ſhewe thee.
2.And I wil make of thee a great nacion, and wil bleſſe thee, and make thy name great, and thou ſhalt be a bleſsing.
3.I wil alſo bleſſe them that bleſſe thee, & curſe them that curſe thee, & in thee ſhal all families of the earth be c bleſſed.
4.So Abrám departed, euen as the Lord ſpake vnto him, and Lot went with him. (And Abrám was ſeuenty and fiue yere olde, when he departed out of Harán)
5.Then Abrám toke Sarái his wife, & Lot his brothers ſonne, and all their ſubſtance that they poſſeſſed, & the d ſoules that they had gotten in Harán, and they departed, to go to the land of Canaan. and to the land of Canáan they came.
6.So Abrám e paſſed through ye land vnto ye place of Shechém, and vnto the " plaine of Moréh (and the f Canaanite was then in the land)
7.And the Lord appeared vnto Abrám, and ſaid, Vnto thy ſede wil I giue this lād. And there buylded he an g altar vnto the Lord, which appeared vnto him.
8.Afterward remouing h thence vnto a mountaine Eaſtward from Beth-él, he pitched his tent hauing Beth-él on the Weſt-ſide, & Haái on ye Eaſt: and there he buylt an i altar vnto the Lord, and called on the name of the Lord.
9.k Againe Abrám wēt forthe going & iourneing towarde the South.
10.l Then there came a famine in the lād: therfore Abrám went downe into Egypt. to ſoiourne there. for there was a great famine famine in the land.
11.¶ And when he drewe nere to entre into Egypt, he ſaid to Sarái his wife, Beholde now, I knowe that thou art a faire woman to loke vpon:
12.Therfore it wil come to paſſe, that whẽ the Egyptians ſe thee, they wil ſay, She is his wife : ſo wil they kil me, but they wil kepe thee aliue.
13.Say, I pray thee, yͭ thou art my m ſiſter, that I may fare wel for thy ſake, and that my " n life may be preſerued by thee.
14.¶ Now, when Abrám was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman: for ſhe was very faire.
15.And the princes of Pharaóh ſawe her, and commended her vnto Pharaóh : ſo the woman was o taken into Pharaohs houſe:
16.Who intreated Abrám wel for her ſake, and he had ſhepe, and beues, and he aſſes, and men ſeruantes and maide ſeruantes, and ſhe aſſes, and camelles.
17.But the Lord p plagued Pharaóh and his houſe with great plagues, becauſe of Sarái Abrams wife.
18.Then Pharaóh called Abrám and ſaid, Why haſt yͭ done this vnto me? Wherfore didest thou not tel me, that ſhe was thy wife?
19.Why ſaideſt thou, She is my ſiſter, that I ſhulde take her to be my wife? Now therfore beholde thy wife, take her and go thy way.
20.And Pharaóh gaue men q commande-mẽt concerning him: and they conueied him forthe, and his wife, and all yͭ he had.

This was a newe trial of Abrams faith: wherby we ſe that the end of one afflictiō is ye beginning of an other.

By this we maie learne not to vſe vnlawful meanes, nor to put others in danger to ſaue our ſelues

read verſe twentie albeit it maie appeare yͭ Abra feared not ſomuch death, as that, if he ſhuld die with out iſſue, Gods promes ſhulde not haue také place: wherein appeared a weake faith.

The Lord toke yͤ defence of this poore ſtranger agaiſt a mightie Kĩg: and as he is euer careful ouer his, ſo did he preſerue Sarái.

To the entẽt yͭ none ſhulde hurt him either in his perſone or goods.
