1 Samuel 28

2 Dauid hathe the chief charge promiſed about Achiſh. 8 Saúl conſulteth with a witche, and ſhe cauſeth him to ſpeake with Samuél. 18 Who declareth his ruine.
1.NOw at that time the Philiſtims aſſembled their bandes and armie to fight with Iſraél: therefore Achiſh ſaid to Dauid, a Be ſure, thou ſhalt go out with me to the battel, thou, and thy men.
2.And Dauid ſaid to Achiſh, Surely thou ſhalt knowe what thy ſeruant can do. And Achiſh ſaid to Dauid, Surely I wil make thee keper of mine head for euer.
3.* (Samuél was then dead, and all Iſraél had lamented him, and buried him in Ramáh his owne citie: and Saúl had b put away the forcerers, and the ſotheſayers out of the land)
4.Then the Philiſtims aſſembled them ſelues, and came, and pitched in Shuném: and Saúl aſſembled all Iſraél, & they pitched in Gilbóa.
5.And when Saúl ſawe the hoſte of the Philiſtims, he was afrayed, and his heart was ſore aſtonied.
6.Therefore Saúl aſked counſel of ye Lord, & the Lord anſwered him not, nether by dreames, nor by c Vrim, nor yet by Prophetes.
7.¶ Then ſaid Saúl vnto his ſeruants, Seke me a woman that hathe a familiar ſpirit, that I may go to her, and aſke of her. And his ſeruants ſaid to him, Beholde, there is a woman at En-dor that hathe a familiar ſpirit.
8.Then Saúl d changed him ſelfe, and put on other raiment, and he went, and two mē with him, and they came to the woman by night: and he ſaid, I pray thee, coniecture vnto me by the familiar ſpirit, and bring me him vp whome I ſhal name vnto thee.
9.And the woman ſaid vnto him, Beholde, thou knoweſt what Saúl hathe done, how he hathe deſtroyed the ſorcerers, and the ſotheſayers out of the land: wherefore thé ſekeſt thou to take me in a ſnare to cauſe me to dye?
10.And Saúl ſware to her by the Lord, ſaying, As the Lord liueth, no e harme ſhal come to thee for this thing.
11.Then ſaid the womā, Whome ſhal I bring vp vnto thee? And he anſwered, Bring me vp Samuél.
12.And when the woman ſawe Samuél, ſhe cryed with a loude voyce, and the woman ſpake to Saúl, ſaying, Why haſt thou deceiued me? for thou art Saúl.
13.And the King ſaid vnto her, Be not afrayed: for what ſaweſt thou? And the woman ſaid vnto Saúl, I ſawe " gods aſcéding vp out of the earth.
14.Then he ſaid vnto her, What facion is he of? And ſhe anſwered, An olde man cometh vp lapped in a mantel: and Saúl f knewe that it was Samuél, and he enclined his face to the ground, & bowed him ſelfe.
15.¶ And Samuél ſaid to Saúl, Why haſt yͤ diſquieted me, to bring me vp? Then Saúl anſwered, I am in great diſtreſſe: for the Philiſtíms make warre againſt me, & God is departed frō me, and anſwereth me no more, nether " by Prophetes nether by dreames: therefore I haue called thee, that thou mayeſt tel me, what I ſhal do.
16.Then ſaid Samuél, Wherefore thē doeſt thou aſke of me, ſeing the Lord is gone from thee, and is thine enemie?
17.Euen the Lord hathe done to g him, as he ſpake "15.28.">* by mine hand: for the Lord wil rent the kingdome out of thine hand, and giue it thy neighbour Dauid.
18.Becauſe thou obeyedſt not the voyce of the Lord, nor executedſt his fearce wrath vpon the Amalekites, therefore hathe the Lord done this vnto thee this day.
19.Moreouer the Lord wil deliuer Iſraél with thee into the hāds of the Philiſtíms: h and tomorowe ſhalt thou and thy ſonnes be with me, & the Lord ſhal giue the hoſte of Iſraél into the hands of the Philiſtíms.
20.Then Saúl fel ſtreyght way all along on the earth, and was ſore i afrayed becauſe of the wordes of Samuél, ſo that there was no ſtrength in him: for he had eaten no bread all the day nor all the night.
21.Then the woman came vnto Saúl, and ſawe that he was ſore troubled, and ſaid vnto him, Se, thine handmayd hathe obeyed thy voyce, & I k haue put my ſoule in mine hand, and haue obeyed thy wordes which thou ſaideſt vnto me.
22.Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou alſo vnto the voyce of thine handmaid, and let me ſet a morſel of bread before thee, that thou mayeſt eat & get thee ſtrength, and go on thy iourney.
23.But he refuſed, and ſaid, I wil not eat: but his ſeruants and the woman together cōpelled him, & he obeied their voyce. ſo he aroſe from the earth, and ſate on the bed.
24.Now the woman had a fat calfe in the houſe, and ſhe haſted, and killed it, and toke floure and kneaded it, and baked of it vnleauened l bread.
25.Then ſhe broght them before Saúl, and before his ſeruants: and when they had eaten, they ſtode vp, and went away the ſame night.
