Samuel 1

The genealogie of Elkanáh father of Samuél 2 His two wiues. 5 Hannáh was baren and praied to the Lord. 15 Her anſwer to Eli. 20 Samuél is borne. 24 She doeth dedicate him to the Lord.
.THere was a man of one of the two a Ramathaím Zophím, of moũt Ephráim, whoſe name was Elkanáh the ſonne of Ierohám, the ſonne of Elihú, the ſonne of Tóhu, the ſonne of Zuph, an Ephrathite:
.And he had two wiues: the name of one was Hannáh, and the name of the other Peninnáh: and Peninnáh had childré, but Hannáh had no children.
.* And this man went vp out of his citie euery yere, to worſhip & to ſacrifice vnto the Lord of hoſtes in b Shilóh, where were the two ſonnes of Elí, Hophní and Phinehás Prieſts of the Lord.
.And on a day, whé Elkanáh ſacrififed, he gaue to Peninnáh his wife and to all her ſonnes and daughters porcions,
.But vnto Hānáh he gaue a worthy c porcion: for he loued Hannáh, and the Lord had made her baren.
.¶ And her aduerſarie vexed her ſore, for aſmuche as ſhe vpbraided her, becauſe the Lord had made her baren.
.(And ſo did he yere by yere) & as oft as ſhe wēt vp to the houſe of ye Lord, thus ſhe vexed her, that ſhe wept and did not eat.
.Then ſaid Elkanáh her houſbād to her, Hannáh, why wepeſt thou? and why eateſt thou not? & why is thine heart troubled? am not I better to thee then ten d ſonnes?
.So Hannáh roſe vp after that they had eaten and dronke in Shilóh (and Elí the Prieſt ſate vpõ a ſtole by one of ye poſtes of the e Temple of the Lord)
.And ſhe was troubled in her minde, and praied vnto the Lord, and wept ſore:
.Alſo ſhe vowed a vowe, & ſaid, O Lord of hoſtes, if thou wilt loke on the trouble of thine handmayd, and remēber me, and not forget thine handmayd, but giue vnto thine handmayd a manchilde, then I wil giue him vnto the Lord all the daies of his life, * and there ſhal no raſer come vpon his head.
.And as ſhe cõtinued praying before the Lord, Elí marked her mouth.
.For Hánáh ſpake in her heart: her lippes did moue onely, but her voyce was not heard: therefore Elí thoght ſhe had bene dronken.
.And Elí ſaid vnto her, How long wilt thou be dronkē? Put away " thy dronkēnes from thee.
.Then Hannáh anſwered and ſaid, Nay my lord, but I am a woman " troubled in ſpirit: I haue drōke nether wine nor ſtrōg drinke, but haue * powred out my ſoule before the Lord.
.Count not thine handmaid " for a wic-ked woman: for of the abundance of my complaint and my grief haue I ſpoken hitherto.
.Then Elí anſwered, and ſaid, Go in peace, and the God of Iſraél grant thy peticion that thou haſt aſked of him.
.She ſaid againe, Let thine handmayd finde f grace in thy ſight: ſo the woman went her way, and did eat, and loked no more ſad.
.¶ Then they roſe vp early, and worſhi-ped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their houſe to Ramáh. Now El-kanáh knewe Hannáh his wife, and the Lord g remembred her.
.For in proceſſe of time Hannáh cõcei-ued, and bare a ſonne, and ſhe called his name Samuél, Becauſe, ſaid ſhe, I haue aſked him of the Lord.
.¶ So the man h Elkanáh & all his houſe went vp to offer vnto ye Lord the yerelie ſacrifice, and his vowe:
.But Hannáh went not vp: for ſhe ſaid vnto her houſbãd, I wil tary vntil the chil-de be weined, then I wil bring him that he may appeare before the Lord, & there abide for euer.
.And Elkanáh her houſband ſaid vnto her, Do what ſemeth thee beſt: tary vntil thou haſt weined him: onely the Lord ac-compliſh his i worde. So the woman a-bode, and gaue her ſonne ſucke vntil ſhe weined him.
.¶ And whë ſhe had weined him, ſhe toke him with her with thre bullockes and an * Epháh of floure and a bottle of wine, and broght him vnto the houſe of the Lord in Shilóh, and the childe was " yong.
.And thei ſlewe a bullocke, and broght the childe to Elí.
.And ſhe ſaid, Oh my lord, as thy k ſoule liueth, my lord, I am the womã that ſtode with thee here praying vnto the Lord.
.I praied for this childe, and the Lord hathe giuen me my deſire which I aſked of him.
.Therefore alſo I haue " giuen him vnto the Lord: as long as he liueth he ſhalbe giuen vnto the Lord: and he l worſhi-ped the Lord there.
