Joshua 22

Reubén, Gad, and the halfe tribe of Manaſſeh are ſent againe to their poſſeſſions. 10 They buyld an altar for a memorial 15 The Iſraelites reproue thẽ. 21 Their anſwer for defenſe of the ſame.
.a THen Iofhúa called the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the halfe tribe of Manaſſeh,
.And ſaid vnto thẽ, Ye haue kept all that Moſés the ſeruant of the Lord b commãded you, and haue obeyed my voyce in all that I commanded you:
.Ye haue not forſaken your brethren this long ſeaſon vnto this day, but haue diligently kept the commandement of the Lord your God.
.And now the Lord hathe giuen reſt vnto your brethren as he promiſed them: therefore now returne ye and go to your tẽtes, to the land of your poſſeſſion, which Moſés the ſeruant of the Lord * hathe giuen you beyonde Iordén.
.But take diligent hede, to do the commandement and Lawe, which Moſés the ſeruant of the Lord commanded you: that is, * that ye c loue the Lord your God, and walke in all his wayes, and kepe his commandements, and cleaue vnto him, and ſerue him with all your heart and with all your ſoule.
.So Iofhúa d bleſſed them and ſent them away, and they went vnto their tents.
.¶ Now vnto one halfe of the tribe of Manaſſeh Moſés had giuen a poſſeſſion in Baſhán and vnto the other halfe thereof gaue Iofhúa among their brethren on this ſide Iordén Weſtward: therefore whẽ Iofhúa ſent them away vnto their tẽtes, and bleſſed them,
.Thus he ſpake vnto thẽ, ſaying, Returne with muche riches vnto your tentes, and with a great multitude of cattel, with ſiluer and with golde, with braſſe and with yron, and with great abundãce of raimẽt: deuide the ſpoyle of your enemies with your e brethren.
.¶ So the children of Reubén, & the children of Gad, and halfe the tribe of Manaſſeh returned, and departed from the children of Iſraél from Shilóh (which is in the land of Canáan) to go vnto the countrey of Gileád to the land of their poſſeſſion, which they had obteined, according to the worde of the Lord by the hand of Moſés.
.¶ And when they came vnto [”] the borders of Iordén (w are in the land of Canáá) then the children of Reubén, and the children of Gad, & the halfe tribe of Manaſſeh, buylt f there an altar by Iordén, a great altar to ſe to.
.¶ Whẽ the children of Iſraél heard ſaye, Beholde, the children of Reubén, and the children of Gad, and the halfe tribe of Manaſſeh haue buylt an altar in the forefront of the land of Canáan vpõ the borders of Iordén at the paſſage of the children of Iſraél:
.When the children of Iſraél heard it, then the whole Congregacion of the children of Iſrael gathered them together at Shilóh to go vp g to warre againſt them.
.Then the children of Iſraél ſent vnto the children of Reubén, and to the children of Gad, and to the halfe tribe of Manaſſeh into the land of Gileád, Phinehás the ſonne of Eleazár the Prieſt,
.And with him ten princes, of euerie chief houſe a prince, according to all the tribes of Iſraél: for euerie one was chief of their fathers houſholde among the [”] thouſandes of Iſraél.
.¶ So they wẽt vnto the children of Reubén, and to the children of Gad, and to the halfe tribe of Manaſſeh, vnto the land of Gileád, and ſpake with them, ſaying,
.Thus ſaith h ye whole Congregacion of the Lord, What tranſgreſſion is this that ye haue tranſgreſſed againſt the God of Iſraél, to turne away this day from the Lord, in that ye haue buylt you an altar for to rebel this day againſt the Lord?
.Haue we to litle for the wickednes * of Peór, whereof we are not i clenſed vnto this day, thogh a plague came vpon the Congregacion of the Lord?
.Ye alſo are turned away this day from the Lord: & ſeing ye rebel to day againſt the Lord, euen tomorowe he wilbe wrath with all the Congregacion of Iſraél.
.Notwitſtanding if the lãd of your poſſeſſion be k vncleane, come ye ouer vnto the land of the poſſeſſiõ of the Lord, wherein the Lords Tabernacle dwelleth, and take poſſeſſion among vs: but l rebel not againſt the Lord, nor rebel not againſt vs in buylding you an altar, beſide the altar of the Lord our God.
.Did not Achán the ſonne of Zérah treſpaſſe grieuouſly in the execrable thing, & wrath fel on * all the Congregacion of Iſraél and this man alone m periſhed not in his wickednes.
.¶ Then the children of Reubén and the children of Gad, & halfe the tribe of Manaſſeh anſwered, and ſaid vnto the heades ouer the thouſandes of Iſraél,
.The Lord God of gods, ye Lord God of gods, he knoweth, and Iſraél him ſelfe ſhal knowe: if by rebellió, or by tranſgreſſion againſt the Lord we haue done it, ſaue thou vs not this day.
.If we haue buylt vs an altar to returne away from the Lord, ether to offer thereó burnt offring, or meat offring, or to offer peace offrings thereon, let ye Lord n him ſelfe require it:
.And if we haue not rather done it for feare of this thing, ſaying, In time to come your children might ſay vnto our childré, What haue ye to do with the Lord God of Iſraél?
.For ye Lord hathe made Iordén a border betwene vs and you, ye children of Reubén, & of Gad: therefore ye haue no parte in the Lord: ſo ſhal your children make our children o ceaſe from fearing the Lord.
.Therefore we ſaid, We wil now go about to make vs an altar, not for burnt offring, nor for ſacrifice,
.But for a * witnes betwene vs and you, and betwene our generacions after vs, to execute the ſeruice of the Lord before him in our burnt offrings, and in our ſacrifices, and in our peace offrings, and that yout children ſhulde not ſay to our children in time to come, Ye haue no parte in the Lord.
.Therefore ſaid we, If ſo be that they ſhulde ſo ſay to vs or to our p generacions in time to come, thé wil we anſwer, Behold the facion of the altar of the Lord, which our fathers made, not for burnt offring nor for ſacrifice, but it is a witnes betwene vs and you.
.God forbid, that we ſhulde rebel againſt the Lord, and turne this day away from the Lord to buyld an altar for burnt offring, or for meat offring, or for ſacrifice, ſaue the altar of the Lord our God, that is before his Tabernacle.
.¶ And when Phineás the Prieſt, and the princes of the Congregacion and heades ouer the thouſandes of Iſraél which were with him, heard the wordes, that the children of Reubén, and children of Gad, and the children of Manaſſeh ſpake, * they were wel content.
.And Phineás the ſonne of Eleazár the Prieſt ſaid vnto the children of Reubén and to ye children of Gad, & to the childré of Manaſſeh, This day we perceiue, that ye Lord is q among vs, becauſe ye haue not done this treſpas againſt the Lord: now ye r haue deliuered the children of Iſraél out of the hand of the Lord.
.¶ Then Phineás the ſonne of Eleazár the Prieſt with the princes returned from the childré of Reubén, and from the children of Gad, out of the land of Gileád, vnto the land of Canáan, to the children of Iſraél, and broght them anſwer.
.And the ſaying pleaſed the children of Iſraél: and the children of Iſraél " bleſſed God, and " minded not to go againſt thé in battel, for to deſtroy the land, wherein the children of Reubén, and Gad dwelt.
.Then the children of Reubén, and the children of Gad called the altar " Ed: for it ſhalbe a witnes betwene vs, that the Lord is God.
