Deuteronomy 1

2 A brefe rehearſal of things done before, frõ Horeb vnto Kadeſh-barnea. 32 Moſés reproueth the people for their incredulitie. 44 The Iſraelites are ouercome by the Amorites becauſe they fought againſt the commandement of the Lord.
1.THeſe be ye wordes which Moſés ſpake vnto all Iſraél on a this ſide Iordén in the wildernes, in the plaine, ouer againſt ye red Sea, b betwene Parán & Tóphel, and Labán, and Hazeróth, and Di-zaháb.
2.There are eleuẽ daies iourney from c Horeb vnto Kadeſh-barnéa, by the way of mount Seír.
3.And it came to paſſe in the firſt day of the eleuenth moneth, in the forteth yere, that Moſés ſpake vnto the children of Iſraél according vnto al that the Lord had giuẽ him in commandement vnto them,
4.After that he had ſlaine d * Sihón the King of ye Amorites which dwelt in Heſhbón, and Og King of Baſhán, which dwelt at Aſhtaróth in Edréi.
5.On this ſide Iordén in the land of Moáb began Moſés to declare e this Law, ſaying,
6.The Lord our God ſpake vnto vs in f Horéb, ſaying, Ye haue dwelt long ynough in this mount,
7.Turne you and departe, and go vnto the mountaine of the Amorites, and vnto all places nere therunto: in the plaine, in the mountaine, or in the valley, bothe Southward, and to the ſea ſide, to the land of ye Canaanites, and vnto Lebanón: euen vnto the great riuer, the riuer " Peráth.
8.Beholde, I haue ſet the land before you: go in and * poſſeſſe that land which the Lord ſware vnto your fathers, Abrahám, Izhák, and Iaakób, to giue vnto thẽ and to their ſede after them.
9.¶ And I ſpake g vnto you the ſame time, ſaying, I am not able to beare you my fel-fe alone:
10.The Lord your God hathe h multiplied you: & beholde, ye are this day as the ſtarres of heauen in nomber:
11.(The Lord God of your fathers make you a thouſand times ſo manie mo as ye are, and bleſſe you, as he hathe promiſed you)
12.How cã I alone i beare your cumbrance and your charge, and your ſtrife?
13.Bring you men of wiſdome and of vnderſtanding, and k knowen among your tribes, and I wil make them rulers ouer you:
14.Then ye anſwered me & ſaid, The thing is good that thou haſt cõmanded vs to do.
15.So I toke the chief of your tribes l wiſe and knowen mé, and made thẽ rulers ouer
16.And I charged your iudges that ſame time, ſaying, Heare the controuerſies betwene your brethren, and * iudge righteouſly betwene euerie man and his brother, and the ſtranger that is with him.
17.Ye ſhal haue no reſpect of perſone in iudgement, * but ſhal heare the ſmall as wel as the great: ye ſhal not feare the face of man: for the iudgemẽt is m Gods: and the cauſe that is to hard for you, bring vnto me, and I wil heare it.
18.Alſo I cõmanded you the ſame time all the things which ye ſhulde do.
19.¶Then we departed from Horéb, and went through all that great and terrible wildernes, (as ye haue ſene) by the way of yͤ mounteine of the Amorites, as the Lord our God commanded vs: and we came to Kadeſh-barnéa.
20.And n I ſaid vnto you, ye are come vnto the mounteine of the Amorites, which the Lord our God doeth giue vnto vs.
21.Beholde, the Lord thy God hathe layed yͤ lãd before thee: go vp & poſſeſſe it, as yͤ Lord yͤ God of thy fathers hathe ſaid vnto thee: feare not, nether be diſcouraged.
22.* Then ye came vnto me euerie one, & ſaid, We wil ſẽd mẽ before vs, to ſearche vs out the land and to bring vs worde againe, what way we muſt go vp by, and vnto what cities we ſhal come.
23.So the ſaying pleaſed me wel, and I toke twelue men of you, of euerie tribe one.
24.* Who departed, and went vp into the moũteine, & came vnto the " riuer Eſhcól, and ſearched out the land.
25.And toke of the frute of the lãd in their hands, and broght it vnto vs, and broght vs worde againe, and p ſaid, It is a good land, which the Lord our God doeth giue vs.
26.Notwithſtanding, ye wolde not go vp, but were diſobedient vnto the commandement of the Lord your God,
27.And murmured in your tentes, and ſaid, Becauſe the Lord q hated vs, therefore hathe he broght vs out of the land of Egypt, to deliuer vs into the hand of the Amorites, and to deſtroy vs.
28.Whether ſhal we go vp? our r brethrẽ haue diſcouraged our hearts, ſaying, The people is greater, and taller then we: the cities are great and walled vp to heauen: and moreouer we haue ſene the ſonnes of the * Anakims there.
29.But I ſaid vnto you, Dread not, nor be afraid of them.
30.The Lord your God, s who goeth before you, he ſhal fight for you, according to all that he did vnto you in Egypt before your eyes,
31.And in the wildernes, where thou haſt ſene how the Lord thy God bare thee, as a man doeth beare his ſonne, in all the way which ye haue gone, vntil ye came vnto this place.
32.Yet for all this ye did not beleue the Lord your God,
33.* Who went in the way before you, to ſearche you out a place to pitche your tẽtes in, in fire by night, yͤ ye might ſe what way to go, and in a cloude by day.
34.Then the Lord heard the voyce of your wordes, and was wroth, and ſware, ſaying,
35.* Surely there ſhal not one of theſe mẽ of this froward generacion, ſe yͤ good land, which I ſware to giue vnto your fathers,
36.Saue Caléb the ſonne of Iephũnéh: he ſhal ſe it, * and to him wil I giue the land that he hathe troden vpon, and to his children, becauſe he hathe cõſtantly followed the Lord.
37.* Alſo the Lord was angry with me for your ſakes, ſaying, * Thou alſo ſhalt not go in thither,
38.But Ioſhúa the ſonne of Nun which ſtãdeth t before thee, he ſhal go in thither: incourage him: for he ſhal cauſe Iſraél to inherit it.
39.Moreouer, your u children, which ye ſaid ſhulde be a pray, and your ſonnes, which in that day had no knowledge betwene good and euil, they ſhal go in thither, and vnto them wil I giue it, and they ſhal poſſeſſe it.
40.But as for you, turne backe, & take your iourney into the wildernes by the way of the red Sea.
41.Thẽ ye anſwered and ſaid vnto me, We haue ſinnẽd againſt the Lord, x we wil go vp, and fight, according to all that yͤ Lord our God hathe commanded vs: and ye armed you euerie man to the warre, & were ready to go vp into the mounteine.
42.But the Lord ſaid vnto me, Say vnto thẽ, Go not vp, nether fight, (for I am y not amõg you) left ye fall before your enemies.
43.And whẽ I tolde you, ye wolde not heare, but rebelled againſt the commandemẽt of the Lord, and were preſumpteous, and went vp into the mounteine.
44.Then the Amorites which dwelt in that mounteine came out againſt you, & chaſed you (as bees vſe to do) and deſtroyed you in Seír, euen vnto Hormah.
45.And when ye came againe, ye wept before the Lord, but the Lord wolde not z heare your voyce, nor incline his eares vnto you.
46.So ye abode in Kadéſh a long time, according to the time that ye had remained before.
