Jeremiah 42

1 The capitaines aſke counſel of Ieremiáh what they oght to do. 7 He admoniſheth the remnant of the people not to go into Egypt.
1.THen all the capitaines of the hoſte, and Iohanán the ſonne of Karéah, & Iezaniáh the ſonne of Hoſhaaiáh, and all the people from the leaſt vnto the moſte came,
2.And ſaid vnto Ieremiáh ye Prophet, Heare our prayer, we beſeche thee, & pray for vs vnto the Lord thy God, euẽ for all this remnant (for we are left, but a fewe of manie, as thine eyes do beholde)
3.That the Lord thy God may ſhewe vs the way wherein we may walke, and the thing that we may do.
4.Then Ieremiáh the Prophet ſaid vnto them, I haue heard you: beholde, I wil pray vnto the Lord your God according to your wordes, and whatſoeuer thing the Lord ſhal anſwer you, I wil declare it vnto you: I wil kepe nothing backe frõ you.
5.Then they ſaid to Ieremiáh, The Lord be a witnes of trueth, and faith betwene vs, if we do not, euen according to all things for the which the Lord thy God ſhal ſend thee to vs.
6.Whether it be good or euil, we wil obey the voyce of the Lord God, to whome we ſend thee that it may be wel with vs, when we obey the voyce of the Lord our God.
7.And ſo after ten dayes came ye worde of the Lord vnto Ieremiáh.
8.Then called he Iohanán the ſonne of Karéah, and all the capitaines of the hoſte, which were with him, and all the people from the leaſt to the moſte,
9.And ſaid vnto thẽ, Thus ſaith the Lord God of Iſraél, vnto whome ye ſent me to preſent your prayers before him,
10.If ye wil dwell in this land, then I wil buyld you, and not deſtroye you, and I wil plant you, and not roote you out: for I repent me of the euil that I haue done vnto you.
11.Feare not for the King of Babél, of whome ye are afraid: be not afraid of him, ſaith the Lord: for I am with you, to ſaue you, and to deliuer you from his hand,
12.And I wil grant you mercie that he may haue compaſsion vpon you, and he ſhal cauſe you to dwell in your owne land.
13.But if ye ſay, We wil not dwell in this land, nether heare the voyce of the Lord your God,
14.Saying, Nay, but we wil go into the lãd of Egypt, where we ſhal ſe no warre, nor heare the ſounde of the trumpet, nor haue hungre of bread, and there wil we dwell,
15.(And now therefore heare the worde of the Lord, ye remnant of Iudáh: thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes the God of Iſraél, If ye ſet your faces to entre into Egypt, and go to dwell there)
16.Then the ſworde that ye feared, ſhal take you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, for ye which ye care, ſhal there hãg vpõ you in Egypt, & there ſhal ye dye.
17.And all the men that ſet their faces to entre into Egypt to dwell there, ſhal dye by the ſworde, by the famine & by ye peſtilence, & none of them ſhal remaine nor eſcape frõ the plague, that I wil bring vpon them.
18.For thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes ye God of Iſraél, As mine angre and my wrath hathe bene powred forthe vpon the inhabitants of Ieruſalém: ſo ſhal my wrath be powred forthe vpõ you, when ye ſhal entre into Egypt, & ye ſhalbe a deteſtation, & an aſtoniſhmẽt, and a curſſe, and a reproche, and ye ſhal ſe this place no more.
19.O ye remnant of Iudáh, the Lord hathe ſaid concerning you, Go not into Egypt: knowe certeinly that I haue admoniſhed you this day.
20.Surely ye diſſembled in your hearts when ye ſent me vnto the Lord your God, ſaying, Pray for vs vnto ye Lord our God, and declare vnto vs euen according vnto all that the Lord our God ſhal ſay, and we wil do it.
21.Therefore I haue this day declared it you, but you haue not obeyed the voyce of the Lord your God, nor anie thing for the which he hathe ſent me vnto you.
22.Now therefore, knowe certeinely that ye ſhal dye by the ſworde, by the famine, and by the peſtilence, in the place whether ye deſire to go and dwell.

This declareth the nature of hypocrites, which wolde knowe of Gods worde what they ſhulde do, but wil not follow it, but in aſmuche as it agreeth with ye thing which they haue purpoſed to do.

There are none woreready to abuſe ye Name of God and take it in vaine, thẽ the hypocrites, wc to colour their falſehood vſe it without all reuerence, and make it a meanes for them to deceiue the ſimple, and the godlie.

Thus God turneth ye policie of the wicked to their owne deſtructiõ. for they thoght theſelues ſure in Egypt, and there Nebuchadnezzár deſtroyed them, and the Egyptians, Chap. 43,11.
