Jeremiah 35

He propoſeth the obedience of the Rechabites, & thereby confoundeth the pride of the Iewes.
1.THe worde which came vnto Ieremiáh from the Lord, in the daies of Iehoiakím the ſonne of Ioſiáh King of Iudáh, ſaying,
2.Go vnto the houſe of the Rechabites, & ſpeake vnto them, & bring them into the Houſe of ye Lord into one of the chābers, and giue them wine to drinke.
3.Then toke I Iaazaniáh, the ſonne of Ieremiáh the ſonne of Habazziniáh, and his brethren, and all his ſonnes, and the whole houſe of the Rechabites,
4.And I broght them into ye Houſe of the Lord, into the chamber of the ſonnes of Hanán, the ſonne of Igdaliáh a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was aboue the chamber of Maaſeiáh the ſonne of Shallúm, the keper of the treaſure.
5.And I ſet before the ſonnes of the houſe of the Rechabites, pottes ful of wine, and cuppes, and ſaid vnto them, Drinke wine.
6.But thei ſaid, We wil drinke no wine: for Ionadáb the ſonne of Recháb our father commanded vs, ſaying, Ye ſhal drinke no wine, nether you nor your ſonnes for euer.
7.Nether ſhal ye buylde houſe, nor ſowe ſede, nor plant vineyarde, nor haue any, but all your daies ye ſhal dwell in tentes, that ye may liue a long time in the land where ye be ſtrangers.
8.Thus haue we obeied ye voice of Ionadáb the ſonne of Recháb our father, in all that he hathe charged vs, and we drinke no wine all our daies, nether we, our wiues, our ſonnes, nor our daughters.
9.Nether buylde we houſes for vs to dwell in, nether haue we vineyarde, nor field, nor ſede,
10.But we haue remained in tētes, and haue obeied, & done according to all that Ionadáb our father commanded vs.
11.But when Nebuchad-nezzár King of Babél came vp into the land, we ſaid, Come, and let vs go to Ieruſalém, from the hoſte of the Caldeans, and from the hoſte of Arám: ſo we dwell at Ieruſalém.
12.Then came the worde of the Lord vnto Ieremiáh, ſaying,
13.Thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, the God of Iſraél, Go, and tel the men of Iudáh, and the inhabitans of Ieruſalém, Wil ye not receiue doctrine to obey my wordes, ſaith the Lord?
14.The cōmandement of Ionadáb the ſonne of Recháb that he cōmanded his ſonnes, that thei ſhulde drike no wine, is ſurely kept: for vnto this day thei drike none, but obey their fathers commandement: notwithſtanding I haue ſpoken vnto you, riſing early, and ſpeaking, but ye wolde not obeie me.
15.I haue ſent alſo vnto you all my ſeruantes the Prophetes, riſing vp early, and ſending them, ſaying, Returne now euerie mã from his euil waie, and amende your workes, and go not after other gods to ſerue them, & ye ſhal dwell in the land which I haue giuen vnto you, and to your fathers, but ye wolde not incline your eare, nor obeie me.
16.Surely the ſonnes of Ionadáb the ſonne of Recháb, haue kept ye cõmandement of their father, which he gaue them, but this people hathe not obeied me.
17.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, ye God of Iſraél, Beholde, I wil bring vpon Iudáh, and vpon all the inhabitants of Ieruſalém, all ye euil that I haue pronounced againſt them, becauſe I haue ſpoken vnto them, but thei wolde not heare, and I haue called vnto them, but thei wolde not anſwer.
18.And Ieremiáh ſaid to the houſe of the Rechabites, Thus ſaith ye Lord of hoſtes the God of Iſraél, Becauſe ye haue obeied the commandement of Ionadáb your father, and kept all his precepts, and done according vnto all that he hathe commanded you,
19.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, the God of Iſraél, Ionadáb the ſonne of Recháb ſhal not want a man, to ſtãd before me for euer.

Which declareth that thei were not ſo bound to their vowe, that it colde not be brokē for any neceſsitie: for where thei we recōmanded to dwel in tētes, thei dwel now at Ieruſalém for feare of ye warres

Whome I haue choſen to be my childrē, ſeing theſe wc were the children of an heathen man, obeied the commandement of their father.

That is by his Prophetes & miniſters: which ſheweth that it is as muche as thegh he ſhulde ſpeake to vs him ſelfe, whenhe ſendeth his miniſters to ſpeake in his Name.
