Psalms 140

1 David complaineth of the crueltie, falsehode and injuries of his enemies 8 Against the which he praieth unto the Lord and assureth him self of his help and succour. 12 Wherefore he provoketh the just to praise the Lord, and to assure them selves of his tuition.
¶ To him that excelleth. A psalme of David.
1.Deliver me, ô Lord, from the evil man: preserve me from the acruel man:
2.Which imagine evil things in their bheart, and make war continually.
3.Thei have sharpened their tongues like a serpent: cadder’s poyson is under their lippes. Sélah.
4.Kepe dme, ô Lord, from the hands of the wicked: preserve me from the cruel man, which purposeth to cause my steps to slide.
5.The proud have laid a snare for me and spred a net with cords in my pathway, and set grennes for me. Sélah.
6.Therefore I said unto the Lord, Thou art my God: hear, ô Lord, the voice of my praiers.
7.O Lord God the strength of my salvation, thou ehast covered mine head in the daie of battel.
8.Let not the wicked have his desire, ô Lord: fperform not his wicked thought, lest thei be proud. Sélah.
9.As for gthe chief of them, that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lippes come upon them.
10.Let coles fall upon them: let hhim cast them into the fire, and into the deep pittes, that thei rise not.
11.For the backbiters shal not be established upon the earth: evil shal ihunt the cruel man to destruction.
12.I know that the Lord wil avenge the afflicted, & judge the poor.
13.Surely the righteous shal praise thy Name, and the just shal kdwel in thy presence.

Which persecutes me of malice and without cause.

That is, by their false cavillations and lies they kindle the hatred of the wicked against me.
3-c.
He shows what weapons the wicked use, when power and force fail them.
4-d.
He declares what is the remedy of the godly, when they are oppressed by the worldelings.
7-e.
He calls to God with lively faith, being assured of his mercies, because he had before time proven, that God helped him ever in his dangers.
8-f.
For it is in God’s hand to overthrough the counsels and enterprises of the wicked.
9-g.
It seems that he alludes to Saul.
10-h.
To wit, God: for David saw that they were reprobate and that there was no hope of repentance in them.
11-i.
God’s plagues shall light upon him in such sort, that he shall not escape.
13-k.
That is, shall be defended & preserved by your Fatherly providence and care.
