1 Ieroboám is reprehended of the Prophet. 4 His hand dryeth vp. 15 The Prophet is ſeduced, 24 And is killed of a lyon. 33 The obſtinacie of Ieroboám.

1.ANd beholde, there came ^a ^a man of God out of Iudáh (by the commandement of the Lord) vnto ^b Beth él, and Ieroboám ſtode by the altar to offer incenſe.

2.And he cryed againſt the altar by the cõmandemẽt of the Lord, and ſaid, O altar, altar, thus ſayth yͤ Lord, Beholde, a childe ſhal be borne vnto the houſe of Dauid, ^* Ioſiáh by name, and vpon thee ſhal he ſacrifice the Prieſts of the hie places that burne incenſe vpon thee, and they ſhal burne mens bones vpon thee.

3.And he gaue a ſigne yͤ ſame time, ſaying, This is the ^c ſigne, that the Lord hathe ſpoken, Beholde, the altar ſhal rent, and the aſſhes that are vpon it, ſhal ^" fall out.

4.And whẽ the King had heard the ſaying of the man of God, which he had cryed againſt yͤ altar in Beth-él, Ieroboám ſtretched out his hand from the altar, ſaying, ^d Lay holde on him: but his hãd which he put forthe againſt him, dryed vp, & he colde not pull it in againe to him.

5.The altar alſo claue aſundre, & the aſſhes fel out from the altar, according to the ſigne, which the man of God had giuen by the ^" commandement of the Lord.

6.Then the King anſwered, and ſaid vnto the man of God, ^e I beſeche thee, pray vnto the Lord thy God, and make interceſſion for me, that mine hand may be reſtored vnto me. And the man of God beſoght the Lord, and the Kings hand was reſtored, and became as it was afore.

7.Thẽ the King ſaid vnto the mã of God, Come home with me, that thou maiſt ^" dine, and I wil giue thee a rewarde.

8.But the man of God ſaid vnto the King, If thou woldeſt giue me halfe thine houſe, I wolde not go in with thee, nether wolde I eat bread nor drinke water in this place.

9.For ſo ^" was it charged me by the worde of the Lord, ſaying, ^f Eat no bread nor drinke water, nor turne againe by the ſame way that thou cameſt.

10.So he went another way & returned not by the way that he came to Beth-él.

11.¶ And an olde Prophet dwelt in Beth-él & his ſonnes came, & tolde him all yͤ workes, yͤ the mã of God had done that day in Beth-él, & the wordes which he had ſpokẽ vnto the King, tolde they their father.

12.And their father ſaid vnto them, What way went he? and his ſonnes ^" ſhewed him what way the man of God went, which came from Iudáh.

13.13 And he ſaid vnto his ſonnes, Sadle me the aſſe. And they ſadled him the aſſe, and he rode thereon,

14.14 And went after the man of God, and founde him ſitting vnder an oke: and he ſaid vnto him, Art thou the man of God that cameſt from Iudáh? And he ſaid, ^" Yea.

15.15 Then he ſaid vnto him, ^g Come home with me, and eat bread.

16.16 But he anſwered, I may not returne with thee, nor go in with thee, nether wil I eat bread nor drinke water with thee in this place.

17.17 For it was charged me by the worde of the Lord, ſaying, Thou ſhalt eat no bread, nor drinke water there, nor turne againe to go by the way that thou wenteſt.

18.18 And he ſaid vnto him, I am a Prophet alſo as thou art, and an ^h Angel ſpake vnto me by the worde of the Lord, ſaying, Bring him againe with thee into thine houſe, that he may eat bread and drinke water: but he lied vnto him.

19.19 So he went againe with him, and did eat bread in his houſe, and dranke water.

20.20 And as they ſate at the table, the worde of the Lord came vnto the Prophet, that broght him againe.

21.21 And he cryed vnto the man of God that came from Iudáh, ſaying, Thus ſaith the Lord, ⁱ Becauſe thou haſt diſobeyed the mouth of the Lord, and haſt not kept the commandement which the Lord thy God commanded thee,

22.22 But cameſt backe againe, and haſt eaten bread & dronke water in the place(whereof he did ſay vnto thee, Thou ſhalt eat no bread nor drinke anie water) thy carkeis ſhal not come vnto the ſepulchre of thy fathers.

23.23 ¶ And when he had eaten bread and dronke, he ſadled him the aſſe, to wit, to the Prophet whome he had broght againe.

24.24 And when he was gone, ^k a lyon met him by the way, and ſlewe him, and his bodie was caſt in the way, and the aſſe ſtode thereby: the lyon ſtode by the corps alſo.

25.25 And beholde, men that paſſed by, ſawe the carkeis caſt in the way, and the lyon ſtanding by the corps: and they came and tolde it in the towne where the olde Prophet dwelt.

26.26 And when the Prophet, that broght him backe againe from the way, heard thereof, he ſaid, It is the man of God, who hathe bene diſobedient vnto the commandement of the Lord: therefore the Lord hathe deliuered him vnto the lyon, which hathe rent him and ſlaine him, according to the worde of the Lord, which he ſpake vnto him.

27.27 ¶ And he ſpake to his ſonnes, ſaying, Sadle me the aſſe. And they ſadled him.

28.28 And he went and founde his body caſt in the way, and the aſſe and the lyon ſtode by the corps: and the lyon had ^l not eaten the body, nor torne the aſſe.

29.29 And y^e Prophet toke vp the body of the man of God, and layed it vpon the aſſe, and broght it againe, and the olde Prophet came to the citie, to lament and bury him.

30.30 And he layed his body in his ^m owne graue, & they lamented ouer him, ſaying, Alas, my brother.

31.31 And when he had buryed him, he ſpake to his ſonnes, ſaying, When I am dead, bury ye me alſo in the ſepulchre, wherein the man of God is buryed: laye my bones beſide his bones.

32.32 For that thing which he cryed by the worde of the Lord againſt the altar that is in Beth-él, and againſt all the houſes of the hie places, which are in the cities of Samaria, ſhal ſurely come to paſſe.

33.33 Howbeit after this, Ieroboám ⁿ conuerted not from his wicked way, but turned againe, and made of the loweſt of the people Prieſts of the hie places. Who wolde, might ^" conſecrate him ſelfe, and be of the Prieſts of the hie places.

34.34 And this thing turned to ſinne vnto the houſe of Ieroboám, euen to roote it out, and deſtroy it from the face of the earth.
