2 Samuel 8

1 Dauid ouercommeth the Philistims, and other strange nacions, and maketh them tributaries to Israél.
1.After * this now, Dauid smote the Philistims, and subdued them, & Dauid toke a the bridle of bondage out of the hand of the Philistims. * *1. Chron. 18, 1. psal. 60, 2.* * a Or, metheg-ammah. * a So that they payed no more tribute.
2.And he smote Moáb, and measured them with a corde, and cast them downe to the ground: he measured them with b two cordes to put them to death, & with one ful corde to kepe them aliue: so became the Moabites Dauids seruants, and broght gifts. * b He slewe two partes, as it pleased him, and reserued the third.
3.Dauid smote also Hadadézer the sonne of Rehób King of Zobáh as he went to c recouer his border at ye riuer d Euphrátes. * c Or, enlarge. * d Ebr. Perath.
4.And Dauid toke a thousand and seuen hundreth horsemen, and twētie thousand fotemen, and e destroyed all the charets, but he reserued an hundreth charets of them. * e Or, hoght the horses of the charets.
5.¶ Then came f the Aramites of g Dammesék to succour Hadadézer King of Zobáh, but Dauid slewe of the Aramites two and twentie thousand men. * f Or, the Syrians. * g Or, of Damascus: that is, which dwelt nere Damascus.
6.And he put a garison in Arám of Dammesék: and the Aramites became seruants to Dauid, h and broght giftes. And the Lord saued Dauid wheresoeuer he went. * h In that part of Syria, where Damascus was. * h They payed yerely tribute.
7.And Dauid toke the shields of golde that belonged to the seruants of Hadadézer, and broght them to i Ierusalém. * i For the vse of the tēple.
8.And out of Bétah, and Berothái (cities of Hadadézer) Dauid broght exceeding muche brasse.
9.¶ Then Tói King of Hamáth heard how Dauid had smitten all the hoste of Hadadézer, * *Or, Tou. 1. chro. 18, 9.*
10.Therefore Tói sent Iorám his sonne vnto King Dauid, k to salute him, and to l reioyce with him because he had foght against Hadadézer, and beaten him (for Hadadézer had warre with Tói) who m broght with him vessels of siluer, and vessels of golde & vessels of brasse. * k Ebr. to aske of peace. * l For blessēg him. * l For seeing Dauid victorious. * m who he was glad to intreat of peace. * m Ebr. in his hād.
11.And King Dauid did dedicate them vnto the Lord with the siluer and golde that he had dedicate of all the nacions, which he had subdued:
12.Of n Arám, & of Moáb, and of the children of Ammón & of the Philistims, and of Amalék, and of the spoyle of Hadadézer the sonne of Rehób King of Zobáh. * n Or Syria, or Calosyria.
13.So Dauid gate a name after that he returned, and had slaine of the Aramites in the valley of salt eightene thousand men. * *Or, in Ge-melah.*
14.And he put a garison in Edóm: throughout all Edóm put he soldiers, and all they of Edóm became Dauids seruants: and ye Lord kept Dauid o wheresoeuer he wēt. * o Or, in all his enterprises.
15.Thus Dauid reigned ouer all Israél, and executed p iudgement and iustice vnto all his people. * p He gaue iudgement in controuersies, and was merciful towarde the people.
16.And Ioáb the sonne of Zeruiáh was ouer the hoste, and Ioshaphát the sonne of Ahilúd was q recorder. * q Or, writer of Chronicles.
17.And Zadók the sonne of Ahitúb, and Ahimélech the sonne of Abiathár were Priests, and Seraiáh the scribe.
18.And Benaiáh the sonne of Iehoiadá r & the s Cherethites & the Pelethites, & Dauids sonnes were chief rulers. * r Or, was ouer the Cherethites. * s The Cherethites & Pelethites were as the kings garde, and had charge of his persone.
