4 Dauid is anoynted King in Hebrón 9 Abnér maketh Iſh-bóſheth King ouer Iſraél 15 The battel of the ſeruants of Dauid and Iſh-bóſheth. 32 The buryal of Aſahél
1.A Fter this Dauid a aſked counſel of the Lord, ſaying, Shal I go vp into anie of the cities of Iudáh? And the Lord ſaid vnto him, Go vp. And Dauid ſaid, Whither ſhal I go? He thẽ anſwered, Vnto b Hebrón.
2.So Dauid went vp thither & his two wi-ues alſo, Ahinóam the Izreelite, and Abi-gáil Nabals wife the Carmelite.
3.And Dauid broght vp the men that were with c him, euerie man with his hou-ſholde, and they dwelt in the cities of Hebrón.
4.¶ Then the men of Iudáh came, and there they anoĩted Dauid King ouer the houſe of Iudáh. And they tolde Dauid, ſaying, * that the men of Iabéſh Gileád buryed Saúl.
5.And Dauid ſent meſſengers vnto the mẽ of Iabéſh Gileád, & ſaid vnto them, Bleſſed are ye of ye Lord, that ye haue ſhewed ſuche kindenes vnto your lord Saúl, that you haue buryed him.
6.Therefore now the Lord ſhewe mercie and d trueth vnto you: and I wil recompence you this benefite, becauſe ye haue done this thing.
7.Therefore now let your hands be ſtrõg, and be you valiant: albeit your maſter Saúl be dead, yet neuertheleſſe the houſe of Iudáh hathe anointed me e King ouer them.
8.¶ But Abnér the ſonne of Ner that was captaine of Sauls hoſte, toke Iſh-boſheth the ſonne of Saúl, and broght him to Mahanáim,
9.And made him King ouer Gileád, and ouer the Aſhurites, and ouer Izreél, and ouer Ephráim, and ouer Beniamín, and ouer f all Iſraél.
10.Iſh-boſheth Sauls ſonne was fourty yere olde when he began to reigne ouer Iſraél, and reigned two yere: but the houſe of Iudáh followed Dauid.
11.g (And the time which Dauid reigned in Hebrón ouer the houſe of Iudáh, was ſeuẽ yere and ſix monethes)
12.¶ And Abnér the ſonne of Ner, and the ſeruants of Iſh-boſheth the ſonne of Saúl went out of Mahanáim to Gibeón.
13.And Ioáb the ſonne of Zeruiáh, and the ſeruants of Dauid went out and met one an other by the poole of Gibeón: and they ſate downe, the one on the one ſide of the poole, and the other on the other ſide of the poole.
14.Then Abnér ſaid to Ioáb, Let the yong men now ariſe, and h playe before vs. And Ioáb ſaid, Let them ariſe.
15.Then there aroſe and went ouer twelue of Beniamín by nomber, which perteined to Iſh-boſheth the ſonne of Saúl, and twelue of the ſeruants of Dauid.
16.And euerie one caught i his fellowe by the head, & thruſt his ſworde in his fellowes ſide, ſo they fel downe together: wherefore the place was called " Helkath-hazzurím which is in Gibeón.
17.And the battel was exceding ſore that ſame day: for Abnér and the men of Iſraél k fel before the ſeruants of Dauid.
18.And there were thre ſonnes of Zeruiáh there, Ioáb, and Abiſhai, and Aſahél. And Aſahél was as light on foote as a wilde roe.
19.And Aſahél followed after Abnér, & in going he turned nether to the right hand nor to the left from Abnér.
20.Then Abnér loked behinde him, & ſaid, Art thou Aſahél? And he anſwered, Yea.
21.Then Abnér ſaid, Turne thee ether to ye right hand or to the left, and take one of the yong men, and take thee his " weapons: but Aſahél wolde not departe from him.
22.And Abnér ſaid to Aſahél, Departe frõ me: l wherefore ſhulde I ſmite thee to the grounde? how thẽ ſhulde I be able to holde vp my face to Ioáb thy brother?
23.And when he wolde not departe, Abnér with the hindre end of the ſpeare ſmote him vnder the m fift rib, that the ſpeare came out behinde him: and he fel downe there, and dyed in his place. And as manie as came to the place where Aſahél fel downe and dyed, ſtode ſtil.
24.Ioáb alſo and Abiſhai purſued after Abnér: and the ſunne went downe, when they were come to ye hil Ammáh, that lieth before Gíah, by the way of the wildernes of Gibeón.
25.And the children of Beniamín gathered them ſelues together after Abnér, & were on an heape and ſtode on the top of an hil.
26.Then Abnér called to Ioáb, and ſaid, Shal the n ſworde deuoure for euer? knoweſt thou not, that it wil be bitternes in the latter end? how long thẽ ſhal it be, or thou bid the people returne frõ following their brethren?
27.And Ioáb ſaid, As God liueth, if thou haddeſt not o ſpoken, ſurely euen in the morning the people had departed euerie one backe from his brother.
28.¶ So Ioáb blewe a trũpet, and all the people ſtode ſtil, and purſued after Iſraél nomore, nether foght they anie more.
29.And Abnér and his men walked all that night through the plaine, & wẽt ouer Iordén, & paſt through all " Bithrón til they came " to Mahanáim.
30.Ioáb alſo returned backe from Abnér: & whẽ he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of Dauids ſeruants ninetene men and Aſahél.
31.But the ſeruãts of Dauid had ſmitten of Beniamín, and of Abners men, ſo that thre p hundreth and threſcore men dyed.
32.And they toke vp Aſahél, and buryed him in the ſepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-léhem: and Ioáb and his men wẽt all night, and when they came to Hebrón, the daie aroſe.
