1 Samuel 4

1 Iſraél is ouercome by the Philiſtims. 4 They do fet the Arke, wherefore the Philiſtims do feare 10 The Arke of the Lord is taken 11 Eli and his childre dye. 19 The death of the wife of Phinehas the ſonne of Eli.
1.ANd Samuél ſpake vnto all Iſraél: || & Iſraél went out againſt ye Philiſtims to battel and pitched beſide * Ebén ézer: and the Philiſtims pitched in Aphék.
2.And ye Philiſtims put them ſelues in array againſt Iſraél: and when they ioyned the battel, Iſraél was ſmitten downe before the Philiſtims: who flewe of the armie in the field about foure thouſand men.
3.So when the people were come into the campe, the Elders of Iſraél ſaid, a Wherefore hathe the Lord ſmitten vs this day before the Philiſtims? let vs bring ye Arke of the couenant of the Lord out of Shilóh vnto vs, that when it commeth among vs, it may ſaue vs out of the hand of our enemies.
4.Thé the people ſent to Shilóh, & broght from thence the Arke of the couenant of the Lord of hoſtes, who b dwelleth betwene the Cherubíms: and there were the two ſonnes of Elí, Hophní, & Phinehás, with the Arke of the couenant of God.
5.And when the Arke of the couenãt of the Lord came into the hoſte, all Iſraél ſhowted a mihgty ſhowte, ſo that the earth rãg againe.
6.And when the Philiſtíms heard the noiſe of the ſhowte, they ſaid, What meaneth the ſounde of this mighty ſhowte in the hoſte of the Ebrewes? & they vnderſtode, that the Arke of the Lord was come into the hoſte.
7.And the Philiſtíms were afraid, and ſaid, God is come into the hoſte: therefore ſaid thei, Wo vnto vs: for it hathe not bene c ſo heretofore.
8.Wo vnto vs, who ſhal deliuer vs out of the hand of theſe mighty Gods? theſe are the Gods that ſmote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the d wildernes.
9.Be ſtrong and play the men, ô Philiſtíms, that ye be not ſeruãts vnto the Ebrewes, * as they haue ſerued you: be valiant therefore, and fight.
10.And the Philiſtíms fought, and Iſraél was ſmitten downe, and fled euerie man into his tent: and there was an exceding great ſlaughter: for there fel of Iſraél e thirtie thouſand fotemen.
11.And the Arke of God was taken, and the two ſonnes of Elí, Hophní and Phinehas dyed.
12.And there ran a man of Beniamín out of the armie, and came to Shilóh the ſame day with his clothes f rent, and earth vpon his head.
13.And when he came, lo, Elí ſate vpon a ſeate by the way ſide, waiting: for his heart g feared for the Arke of God: and when the man came into the citie to tel it, all the citie cryed out.
14.And when Elí heard the noiſe of the crying, he ſaid, What meaneth this noiſe of the tumult? and the mã came in haſtely, and tolde Elí.
15.(Now Elí was foureſcore and eightene yere olde, and * his eyes were dimme that he colde not ſe)
16.And the man ſaid vnto Elí, I came from the armie, and I fled this day out of the hoſte: and he ſaid, What thing is done, my ſonne?
17.Then the meſſenger anſwered and ſaid, Iſraél is fled before the Philiſtíms, and there hathe bene alſo a great ſlaughter among among the people: and moreouer thy two ſonnes, Hophní and Phinehás h are dead, and the Arke of God is taken.
18.¶ And whe he had made mencion of the Arke of God, Eli fel from his ſeate backwarde by the ſide of the gate , & his necke was broken, and he dyed: for he was an olde mā and heauye: and he had iudged " Iſraél fortie yeres.
19.And his daugter in lawe Phinehás wife was with childe neere " her trauel: and when ſhe heard the report that the Arke of God was taken, and that her father in lawe & her houſband were dead, ſhe i bowed her ſelfe , and traueled : for her paines came vpon her.
20.And about the time of her death, the women that ſtode about her, ſaid vnto her, Feare not: for thou haſt borne a ſonne: but ſhe anſwered not, nor regarded it.
21.And ſhe named the childe m Ichabód, ſaying, The glorie is departed from Iſraél, becauſe the Arke of God was taken, & becauſe of her father in lawe and her houſband.
22.She ſaid againe, k The glorie is departed frō Iſraél: for the Arke of God is takē.
