Samuel 23

Dauid chaſeth the Philiſtims from Keiláh. 13 Dauid departeth from Keiláh, and remaineth in the wildernes of Ziph. 16 Ionathán comforteth Dauid. 28 Sauls entrepriſe is broken in purſuing Dauid.
.THen they tolde Dauid, ſaying, Beholde, the Philiſtims fight againſt a Keiláh, and ſpoyle the barnes.
.Therefore Dauid aſked coūſel of ye Lord, ſaying, Shal I go and ſmite theſe Philiſtims? And the Lord anſwered Dauid, Go and ſmite the Philiſtims, and ſaue Keiláh.
.And Dauids men ſaid vnto him, Se, we be afraied here in b Iudáh, how muche more if we come to Keiláh againſt the hoſte of the
.Then Dauid asked counſel of the Lord againe. And the Lord anſwered him, and ſaid, Ariſe, go downe to Keiláh : for I wil deliuer the Philiſtims into thine hand.
.¶ So Dauid and his men went to Keiláh, and foght with the Philiſtims, and broght away theyr cattel, and ſmote them with a great ſlaughter : thus Dauid ſaued the inhabitants of Keiláh.
.(And whẽ Abiathár the ſonne of Ahimélech * fled to Dauid to Keiláh, he broght an c Ephód " with him)
.¶ And it was tolde Saúl that Dauid was come to Keiláh, and Saúl ſaid, God hathe deliuered him into mine hand : for he is ſhut in, ſeing he is come into a citie that hathe gates and barres.
.Thẽ Saúl called all the people together to warre, for to go downe to Keiláh, and to beſiege Dauid and his men.
.¶ And Dauid hauing knowledge that Saúl imagined miſchief againſt him, ſaid to Abiathár the Prieſt, d Bring the Ephód.
.Then ſaid Dauid, O Lord God of Iſraél, thy ſeruant hathe heard, that Saúl is about to come to Keiláh to deſtroy the citie for my ſake.
.Wil the lords of Keiláh deliuer me vp into his hãd? and wil Saúl come downe, as thy ſeruant hathe heard? O Lord God of Iſraél, I beſeche thee, tel thy ſeruant. And the Lord ſaid, He wil come downe.
.Thẽ ſaid Dauid, Wil the " lords of Keiláh deliuer me vp and the men that are with me, into the hand of Saúl? And the Lord ſaid, They wil deliuer thee vp.
.¶ Then Dauid and his men, which were about ſix hundreth, aroſe, and departed out of Keiláh, and went " whither they colde. And it was tolde Saúl, that Dauid was fled from Keiláh, and he left of his iorney.
.And Dauid abode in the wildernes in " holdes, and remained in a mountaine in the wildernes of Ziph. And Saúl ſoght him euerie day, but God e deliuered him not into his hand.
.And Dauid ſawe that Saúl was come out for to ſeke his life & Dauid was in the wildernes of Ziph in the wood.
.¶ And Ionathán Sauls ſonne aroſe and went to Dauid into the wood, and comfor-ted " him in God,
.And ſaid vnto him, Feare not : for the hãd of Saúl my father ſhal not finde thee, and thou ſhalt be f King ouer Iſraél, and I ſhal be next vnto thee. and alſo Saúl my father knoweth it.
.So they twaine made a couenant before the Lord. and Dauid did remaine in the wood : but Ionathán went to his houſe.
.¶ Then came vp the Ziphíms to Saúl to Gibeáh, ſayĩg, Doeth not Dauid hide him ſelfe by vs in holdes, in the wood in the hil of Hachiláh, which is on the right ſide " of Ieſhimon?
.Now therefore ô King, come downe according to all that thine heart can deſire, & our parte ſhalbe to deliuer him into the Kings hands.
.Then Saúl ſaid, g Be ye bleſſed of the Lord : for ye haue had compaſsion on me.
.Go, I pray you, and prepare yet better : knowe and ſe his place where he h haunteth, and who hathe ſene him there : for it is ſaid to me, He is ſubtile, and crafty.
.Se therefore, and knowe all the ſecret places where he hideth him ſelfe, & come ye againe to me with the certentie, and I wil go with you : and if he be in the h land, I wil ſearche him out throughout all the thouſands of Iudáh.
.Thé they aroſe and went to Ziph before Saúl, but Dauid and his men were in the wildernes of Maón, in the plaine on the right hand of Ieſhimón.
.Saúl alſo and his men went to ſeke him, and they tolde Dauid : wherefore he came downe vnto a rocke, and abode in the wildernes of Maón. And when Saúl heard that, he followed after Dauid in y wildernes of Maón.
.And Saúl and his men went on the one ſide of the mountaine, and Dauid and his men on the other ſide of the mountaine : and Dauid made haſte to get from the preſence of Saúl : for Saúl and his men cõpaſſed Dauid & his men round about, to take them.
.But there came a k meſſinger to Saúl, ſaying, Haſte thee, and come : for the Philiſtims haue inuaded the land.
.Wherefore Saúl returned from purſuing Dauid, and went againſt the Philiſtims. Therefore they called that place, l Sela-hammáhlekoth.
