Joshua 7

The Lord is angry with Achán. 4 They of Aí put the Iſraelites to flight. 6 Ioſhúa prayeth to the Lord. 16 Ioſhúa inquireth out him that ſinned, and ſtoneth him & all his.
.BVt the children of Iſraél committed a treſpaſſe in the a excommunicate thing: for * Achán the ſonne of Carmí, the ſonne of Zabdí, the ſonne of Zérah of yͤ tribe of Iudáh toke of the excõmunicate thing: wherefore the wrath of the Lord was kindled againſt the children of Iſraél.
.And Ioſhúa ſent men from Ierichó to b Aí, which is beſide Bethauén, on the Eaſt ſide of Beth-él, and ſpake vnto them, ſaying, Go vp, and vewe the countrey. And the men went vp, and vewed Aí,
.And returned to Ioſhúa, and ſaid vnto hí, Let not all yͤ people go vp, but let as it were two or thre thouſand mé go vp, & ſmite Aí, and make not all the people to labour thether, for they are fewe.
.So there went vp thether of the people about thre thouſand men, & they fled before the men of Aí.
.And the c men of Aí ſmote of them vpon a thirtie and ſix men: for they chaſed them from before the gate vnto Shebarím, and ſmote them in the going downe: wherefore the heartes of the people melted away like water.
.¶ Then Ioſhúa rent his clothes, and fel to the earth vpon his face before the Arke of the Lord, vntil the euentide, he, and the Elders of Iſraél, and put duſt vpon their heades.
.And Ioſhúa ſaid, Alas, ô Lord God, wherefore haſt thou broght this people ouer Iordén, to deliuer vs into the hand of the Amorites, and to deſtroy vs? wolde God we had bene contét to dwel on the d other ſide Iordén.
.Oh Lord, what ſhal I ſay, whé Iſraél turne their backes before their enemies?
.For the Canaanites, and all the inhabitants of the land ſhal heare of it, and ſhal compaſſe vs, and deſtroy our name out of the earth: and what wilt thou do vnto thy mightie e Name?
.¶ And the Lord ſaid vnto Ioſhúa, Get thee vp. wherefore lieſt thou thus vpon thy face?
.Iſraél hathe ſinned, and they haue tranſgreſſed my couenant, which I commāded them: for thei haue euē taken of the excómunicate thing, and haue alſo ſtollen, and diſſembled alſo, & haue put it euen with their owne ſtuffe.
.Therefore the childrẽ of Iſraél can not ſtande before their enemies, but haue turned their backes before their enemies, becauſe they be execrable: nether wil I be with you anie more, except ye deſtroy the excommunicate from among you.
.f Vp therefore, ſanctifie the people, and ſay, Sanctifie your ſelues againſt tomorowe: for thus ſaith the Lord God of Iſraél, There is an execrable thing among you, ô Iſraél, therefore ye can not ſtand againſt your enemies, vntil ye haue put the g execrable thing from among you.
.In the morning therefore ye ſhal come according to your tribes, and the tribe which the Lord taketh, ſhal come according to the families: & the familie which the Lord ſhal take, ſhal come by the houſholds: & the houſholde which the Lord ſhal take, ſhal come man by man.
.And he that is h taken with the excommunicate thing, ſhalbe burnt with fire, he, & all that he hathe, becauſe he hathe trãſgreſſed the couenant of the Lord, and becauſe he hathe wroght foly in Iſraél.
.So Ioſhúa roſe vp early in yͤ morning & broght Iſraél by their tribes: & the tribe of Iudah was taken.
.And he broght the families of Iudáh, & toke the familie of the Zarhites, and he broght the familie of the Zarhites, man by man, and Zabdí was taken.
.And he broght his houſholde, man by man, and Achan the ſonne of Carmí, the ſonne of Zabdí, the ſonne of Zérah of the tribe of Iudáh was taken.
.Then Ioſhúa ſaid vnto Achán, My ſonne I beſeche thee, giue glorie to the Lord God of Iſraél, and i make confeſſion vnto him, and ſhew me now what thou haſt done: hide it not from me.
.And Achán anſwered Ioſhúa, and ſaid, In dede, I haue ſinned againſt the Lord God of Iſraél, and thus, and thus haue I done.
.I ſawe among the ſpoyle a goodly k Babyloniſh garmẽt, & two hundreth ſhekels of ſiluer, and a l wedge of golde of fyftie ſhekels weight, and I coueted them, and toke them: and beholde, they lye hid in the earth in the middes of my tent, & the ſiluer vnder it.
.Then Ioſhúa ſent meſſengers, which ran vnto the tent, and beholde, it was hid in his tent, and the ſiluer vnder it.
.Therefore they toke them out of the tẽt, and broght them vnto Ioſhúa, and vnto all the children of Iſraél, and layed them before the Lord.
.Then Ioſhúa toke Achán the ſonne of Zérah, and the ſiluer, & the garment and the wedge of golde and his m ſonnes, & his daughters, and his oxen, and his aſſes, and his ſhepe, and his tent, and all that he had: and all Iſraél with him broght them vnto the valley of Achór.
.And Ioſhúa ſaid, n In as muche as thou haſt troubled vs, the Lord ſhal trouble thee this day: and all Iſraél threwe ſtones at him, and burned them with fire, & ſtoned them with ſtones.
.And they caſt vpon him a great heape of ſtones vnto this day: and ſo the Lord turned from his fearee wrath: therefore he called the name of that place, The valley of Achór, vnto this day.
