Jeremiah 11

[*] A curſe of them that obey not the worde of Gods couenant. 10 The people of Iudáh, following the ſteppes of their fathers, worſhippe ſtrange gods. 15 The Lord forbiddeth Ieremiah to praie for them.
1.THe worde that came to Ieremiáh frõ the Lord, ſaying,
2.Heare ye the wordes of this couenant, & ſpeake vnto the men of Iudáh, and to the inhabitants of Ieruſalém,
3.And ſay thou vnto them, Thus ſaith the Lord God of Iſraél, aCurſed be the man that obeieth not the wordes of this couenant,
4.Which I commanded vnto your fathers, when I broght them out of the land of Egypt, from the yron fornace, ſaying, Obey my voyce, and do according to all theſe things, which I commande you: ſo ſhal ye be my people, and I wil be your God,
5.That I may confirme the othe, that I haue ſworne vnto your fathers, to giue them a land, which floweth with milke and hony, as appeareth this day. Then anſwered I & ſaid, So be it, ô Lord.
6.Then the Lord ſaid vnto me, Crye all theſe wordes in the cities of Iudáh, and in the ſtretes of Ieruſalém, ſaying, Heare ye the wordes of this couenant, and do thẽ.
7.For I haue proteſted vnto your fathers, when I broght them vp out of the land of Egypt vnto this day, riſing earely & proteſting, ſaying, Obey my voyce.
8.Neuertheles they wolde not obey, nor encline their eare: but euery one walked in the ſtubbernes of his wicked heart: therefore I wil bring vpon them all the wordes of this couenant, which I commanded them to do, but thei did it not.
9.And the Lord ſaid vnto me, A conſpiracie is founde among the men of Iudáh, & among the inhabitants of Ieruſalém.
10.They are turned backe to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refuſed to heare my wordes: and they went after other gods to ſerue them: thus the houſe of Iſraél, and the houſe of Iudáh haue broken my couenant, which I made with their fathers.
11.Therefore thus ſaith the Lord, Beholde, I wil bring a plague vpon them, which they ſhal not be able to eſcape, and thogh they crye vnto me, I wil not heare them.
12.Then ſhal the cities of Iudáh, and the inhabitants of Ieruſalém go, and crye vnto the gods vnto whome thei offer incenſe, but they ſhal not be able to helpe them in time of their trouble.
13.For according to the nomber of thy cities were thy gods, ô Iudáh, and according to the nomber of the ſtretes of Ieruſalém haue ye ſet vp altars of confuſion, euen altars to burne incenſe vnto Báal.
14.Therefore thou ſhalt not pray for this people, nether lift vp a crye, or prayer for them: for when thei crye vnto me in their trouble, I wil not heare them.
15.What ſhulde my beloued tary in mine houſe, ſeing they haue committed abominacion with many? and the holy fleſh goeth away frõ thec: yet when thou doeſt euil, thou reioyceſt.
16.The Lord called thy name, A grene oliue tre, faire, and of goodlie frute: but with *a noiſe and great tumült he hathe ſet fyre vpon it, and the branches of it are broken.
17.For the Lord of hoſtes that planted the , hathe pronounced a plague againſt thee, (for the wickednes of the houſe of Iſraél, and of the houſe of Iudáh) which thei haue done againſt them ſelues to prouoke me to angre in offring incenſe vnto Báal.
18.And the Lord hathe taught me, and I knowe it, euen then ÿ ſhewedſt me their practiſes.
19.But I was like a lambe, or a bullocke, that is broght to the ſlaughter, and I knewe not ÿ thei had deuiſed thus againſt me, ſaying, Let vs deſtroye the tre with the frute thereof, and cut him out of the land of the liuing, that his name may be no more in memorie.
20.But ô Lord of hoſtes, that iudgeſt righteouſly, and tryeſt the reines & the heart, let me ſe thy vengeance on them: for vnto thee haue I opened my cauſe.
21.The Lord therefore ſpeaketh thus of the men of Anathóth, (that ſeke thy life, & ſay, Prophecie not in the Name of the Lord, that thou dye not by our hands)
22.Thus therefore ſaith the Lord of hoſtes, Beholde, I wil viſit them: the yong men ſhal dye by ye ſworde: their ſonnes & their daughters ſhal dye by famine,
23.And none of them ſhal remaine: for I wil bring a plague vpõ the men of Anathóth, euen the yere of their viſitacion.

To wit, bothe the prieſts and the reſte of the people: for this towne was the prieſts, & they dwelt in it, read Chap 1, 1.

Not yt they colde not abide to heare God named: (for hereof thei wolde ſhewe them ſelues moſt holy) but becauſe they colde not abide to be ſharpely reproued and therefore deſired to be flattered, Iſa. 30, 10, and to be mainteined in their pleaſures, Mich 2, 11, and not to heare vice cõdẽned, Amos 7, 12.
