Jeremiah 1

2 In what time Ieremiáh prophecied. 6 He acknowledgeth his imperfection, and is ſtrengthened of the Lord. 11 The Lord ſheweth him the deſtruction of Ieruſalém. 17 He commandeth him to preache his worde without feare.
1.T HE wordes of Ieremiáh the ſonne of Hilkiáh one of the Prieſts that were at Anathóth in the land of Beniamín.
2.To whome the worde of the Lord came in the daies of Ioſiáh the ſonne of Amón King of Iudáh in the thirtenth yere of his reigne:
3.And alſo in the daies of Iehoiakím the ſonne of Ioſiáh King of Iudáh vnto the end of the eleuenth yere of Zedekiáh the ſonne of Ioſiáh King of Iudáh, euen vnto the carying awaie of Ieruſalém captiue in the fift moneth.
4.Then the worde of the Lord came vnto me, ſaying,
5.Before I formed thee in the wombe, I knewe thee, and before thou cameſt out of the wombe, I ſanctified thee, & ordeined thee to be a Prophet vnto the nations.
6.Then ſaid I, Oh, Lord God, beholde, I can not ſpeake, for I am a childe.
7.But the Lord ſaid vnto me, Saie not, I am a childe: for thou ſhalt go to all that I ſhal ſend thee, and whatſoeuer I commande thee, ſhalt thou ſpeake.
8.Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliuer thee, ſaith the Lord.
9.Then the Lord ſtretched out his hand & touched my mouth, and the Lord ſaid vnto me, Beholde, I haue put my wordes in thy mouth.
10.Beholde, this daie haue I ſet thee ouer ye natiōs and ouer the kingdomes to plucke vp, and to roote out, and to deſtroy and throwe downe, to buylde, and to plant.
11.After this ye worde of the Lord came vnto me, ſaying, Ieremiáh, what ſeeſt thou? And I ſaid, I ſe a rod of an almonde tre.
12.Then ſaid the Lord vnto me, Thou haſt ſene aright: for I wil haſten my worde to performe it.
13.Againe the worde of the Lord came vnto me the ſeconde time, ſaying, What ſeeſt thou? And I ſaid, I ſe a ſeething pot lokīg out of the North.
14.Then ſaid the Lord vnto me, Out of the North ſhal a plague be ſpred vpon all the inhabitants of the land.
15.For lo, I wil call all the families of the kingdomes of the North, ſaith the Lord, and thei ſhal come, and euerie one ſhal ſet his throne in the entring of the gates of Ieruſalém, and on all the walles thereof rounde about, and in all ye cities of Iudáh.
16.And I wil declare vnto them my iudgements touching all the wickednes of them that haue forſaken me, and haue burnt incenſe vnto other gods, and worſhiped the workes of their owne hands.
17.Thou therefore truſſe vp thy loynes, & ariſe & ſpeake vnto them all that I commande thee: be not afrayed of their faces, leſt I deſtroye thee before them.
18.For I, beholde, I this day haue made thee a defenced citie, and an yron piller and walles of braſſe againſt the whole land, againſt the Kings of Iudáh, and againſt the princes thereof, againſt the Prieſts thereof, and againſt the people of the land.
19.For they ſhal fight againſt thee, but thei ſhal not preuaile againſt thee: for I am wt thee to deliuer thee, ſaith the Lord.

Which is thoght to be he yt founde ye booke of the Law vnder King Ioſiáh, 2. King 22, 8.

This was a citie about thre miles diſtãt frõ Ieruſalém, and belonged to ye Prieſts ye ſonnes of Aarón, Ioſh. 21, 18.

This is ſpoken to cõfirme his vocation & office: foraſmuche as he did not preſume of him ſelf to preache, & prophecie, but was called yhereunto by God.
3:e.
Meaning, ye nephewe of Ioſiáh: for Iehoaház was his father, who reigned but thre moneths and therefore is not mencioned: no more is Ioachīn that reigned no longer.
3:f.
Of the eleuenth yere of Zedekiáh, who was alſo called Mattaniáh, and at this time the Iewes were caried away into Babylon by Nebuchadnezzár.
5:g.
The Scripture vſeth this maner of ſpeache to declare, that God hathe appointed his miniſters to their offices before thei were borne, as Iſa. 49, 1. gal. 1, 15.
5:h.
For Ieremiáh did not onely prophecie againſt the Iewes, but alſo againſt the Egyptians, Babylonians, Moabites, and other nations.
6:i.
Conſidering the great iudgements of God, which according to his threatenīgs ſhulde come vpon the worlde, he was moued with a certeine compaſsion on the one ſide to pitie them that ſhulde thus periſh, & on the other ſide by ye infirmitie of mãs nature knowing how hard a thing it was to enterpriſe ſuche a charge, as Iſa. 6, 11. exod 3, 11. & 4, 1.

Which declareth, ye God maketh them mete, & aſſureth thē, whome he calleth to ſet forthe his glorie: giuing them all meanes neceſſarie for the ſame, Exod. 4, 12, Iſa. 6, 7.
10:l.
He ſheweth, what is ye autoritie of Gods true miniſters, ye by his worde haue power to beat downe whatſoeuer lifteth it ſelf vp againſt God: & to plant & aſſure the humble, & ſuche as giue them ſelues to the obedience of Gods worde, 2. Cor. 10, 4. ebr. 4, 12. and theſe are ye keyes which Chriſt hathe left to looſe, & binde, Mat. 18, 18.
11:m.
He ioyneth ye ſigne with ye worde for a more ample confirmation: ſignifying by the rod of the almond tre, ye firſt buddeth, ye haſtie cõming of the Babylonians againſt the Iewes.
13:n.
Signifying, that the Caldeans, & Aſſyriās ſhuld be as a pot to ſeethe ye Iewes, which boyled in their pleaſures, and luſtes.
14:o.
Syria & Aſſyria were North ward in reſpect of Ieruſalém, which were the Caldeans dominion.

I wil giue them charge and power to execute my vengeance againſt the idolaters, yt haue forſaken me for their idoles.
17:q.
Which declareth ye Gods vengeāce is prepared againſt them, ye dare not execute their duetie faithfully, ether for feare of mã, or for anie other cauſe, 1. Cor. 9, 16.
18:r.
Signifying on ye one parte, that the more that Satan, and the worlde rage againſt Gods miniſters, the more preſent wil he be to help thẽ, Ioſh. 1.5. ebr. 13.5. & on the other parte, that they are vtterly vnmete to ſerue God, and his Church, which are afraide, and do not reſiſt wickednes, whatſoeuer danger depende thereon, Iſa. 50.7, ezek.3.8.
