Psalms 58

1 He describeth the malice of his enemies, the flatterers of Saúl, who both secretly and openly sought his destruction, from whom he appealeth to God’s judgement, 10 Shewing that the just shal rejoyce, when they see the punishment of the wicked to the glory of God.
¶ To him that excelleth Destroy not. A Psal. of David on Michtám.
1.Is it true? ô aCongregacion, speak ye justly? ô sonnes of men, judge ye uprightly?
2.Yea, rather ye imagine mischief in your heart: byour hands execute crueltie upon the earth.
3.The wicked care strangers from the womb: even from the belly have they erred, and speak lies.
4.Their poison is even like the poison of a serpent: like the deaf dadder that stoppeth his ear.
5.Which heareth not the voice of the inchanter, though he be most expert in charming.
6.Break their eteeth, ô God, in their mouths: break the jaws of the young lions, ô Lord.
7.Let them fmelt like the waters, let them pass away: when he shooteth his arrows, let them be as broken.
8.Let him consume like a snail that melteth, & like the untimelie fruit of a woman, that hath not seen the sun.
9.gAs raw flesh before your pots feel the fire of thornes: so let him carry them away as with a whirl wind in his wrath.
10.The righteous shal hrejoyce when he seeth the vengeance: he shal wash his feet in the iblood of the wicked.
11.And men shal say, kVerely there is fruit for the righteous: doutles there is a God that judgeth in the earth.

Notes

You counsellors of Saul, who under pretence of consulting for the common wealth conspire my death being an innocent.

They pass in malice, and subtlety the crafty serpent, which could preserve himself by stopping his ear from the enchanter.
6-e.
Take away all occasions and means, whereby they hurt.
7-f.
Considering God’s divine power he shows that God in a moment can destroy their force, whereof they brag.
9-g.
As flesh is taken raw out of the pot before the water seethes: so he desires God to destroy their enterprises before they bring them to pass.
10-h.
With a pure affection.
10-i.
Their punishment and slaughter shalbe so great.
11-k.
Seeing God governs all by his providence, he must needs put difference between the godly, and the wicked.
