2 Kings 16

1. Aház King of Iudáh conſecrateth his ſonne in fyre. 5 Ieruſalém is beſieged. 9 Damaſcus is taken and Rezin ſlaine 11 Idolatrie 19 The death of Aház. 20 Hezekiah ſuccedeth him.
1.a THe ſeuententh yere of Pekáh the ſonne of Remaliáh, Aház the ſonne of Iothám King of Iudáh began to reigne.
2.Twentie yere olde was Aház, when he began to reigne, and he reigned ſixtene yere in Ieruſalém, and did not vprightely in the ſight of the Lord his God, like Dauid his father:
3.But walked in the way of the Kings of Iſraél, yea, & made his ſonne to b go thorow the fyre, after the abominations of the heathẽ, whome the Lord had caſt out before the children of Iſraél.
4.Alſo he offred and burnt incenſe in the hie places and on the hilles, & vnder euerie grene tre.
5.* Then Rezín King of Arám and Pekáh ſonne of Remaliáh Kig of Iſraél came vp to Ieruſalém to fight: & they beſieged Aház, but colde not ouercome c him.
6.At the ſame time Rezín King of Arám reſtored d Eláth to Arám, and droue the Iewes frõ Eláth: ſo the Aramites came to Eláth, and dwelt there vnto this day.
7.Then Aház ſent e meſſengers to Tigláth Pileſár King of Aſſhúr, ſaying, I am thy ſeruant and thy ſonne: come vp, and deliuer me out of the hand of the King of Arám, and out of the hand of the King of Iſraél which riſe vp againſt me.
8.And Aház toke the ſiluer and the golde that was foũde in the f houſe of the Lord, and in the treaſures of the Kings houſe, and ſent a preſent vnto the King of Aſſhúr.
9.And the King of Aſſhúr conſented vnto him: and the King of Aſſhúr went vp againſt Damaſcus, and when he had takẽ it, he caried the people away to Kír, and ſlewe Rezín.
10.And King Aház went vnto Damaſcus, to mete Tigláth Pileſár King of Aſſhúr: and when King Aház ſawe the altar that was at Damaſcus, he ſent to Vriiáh the Prieſt the patern of the altar, and the facion of it, and all the workemanſhip thereof.
11.g And Vriiáh the Prieſt made an altar & in all pointes like to that which King Aház had ſent from Damaſcus, ſo did Vriiáh the Prieſt againſt King Aház came from Damaſcus.
12.So when the King was come from Damaſcus, the Kig ſawe the altar: & the King drewe nere to the altar and offred h thereon.
13.And he burnt his burntoffring, and his meat offring, & powred his drinkoffring, and ſprinkled the blood of his peace offrings beſides the altar,
14.And ſet it by the braſen altar which was before the Lord, and broght it in farther before the houſe betwene the altar and the houſe of the Lord, & ſet it on the i Northſide of the altar.
15.And King Aház cõmãded Vriiáh the Prieſt and ſaid, Vpon the great altar ſet on fyre in the morning the burntoffring, and in the euen the meat offring, and the Kings burnt offring and his meat offring, with the burntoffring of all the people of the land, and their meat offring, and their drinkoffrings: and powre thereby all the blood of the burnt offring, and all the blood of the ſacrifice, and the k braſen altar ſhalbe for me to inquire of God.
16.And Vriiáh the Prieſt did according to all that King Aház had commanded.
17.And King Aház brake the borders of the baſes, and toke the caldrons from of them, and toke downe the ſea from the braſen oxen that were vnder it, and put it vpon a pauement of ſtones.
18.And the l vaile for the Sabbáth (that they had made in the houſe) & the Kings entrie without turned he to the houſe of the Lord, m becauſe of ye King of Aſſhúr.
19.Concerning the reſt of the actes of Aház, which he did, are they not writen in the boke of the Chronicles of the Kings of Iudáh?
20.And Aház ſlept with his fathers, & was buryed with his fathers in the citie of Dauid, & Hezekiáh his ſonne reigned in his ſteade.

1:a.
This was a wicked ſonne of a godlie father, as of him againe came godlie Ezekiah, and of him wicked Manaſſeh, ſaue that God in y^e end ſhewed him mercie, thus we ſe how vncerteine it is to depend on the dignitie of our fathers.

That is, offred hĩ to Moléch, or made him to paſſe betwene two fyres, as y^e maner of the Gẽtiles was, Leu. 21,18, Deu.18, 10.

Thus he ſpared not to ſpoile the Temple of God to haue ſuccour of man, and wolde not once lift his heart toward God to deſire his helpe, nor yet heare his Prophetes counſel.
11:g.
We ſe that there is no prieſt ſo wicked, but he ſhal finde flatterers & falſe miniſters to ſerue his turne.
12:h.
Ether offrings for peace or proſperitie, or of thankes giuing, as Leui 3,1, or els meaning the morning and euenig offrĩg, Exod 29,38, Nom 28,3: and thus he contẽned the meanes and the altar which God had commanded by Salomón, to ſerue God after his owne fantaſie.
14:i.
That is, at y^e right hand as men went into the Temple.
15:k.
Here he eſtabliſheth by cõmandemẽt his owne wicked procedings, & doeth aboliſh the commandement & ordinance of God.
18:l.
Or tent, where in they lay on y^e Sabbath which had ſerued their weeke in the Temple. and ſo departed home.
18:m.
Ether to flatter the King of Aſſyria, when he ſhulde thus ſe him change the ordinãce of God, or els that the Temple might be a refuge for him if y^e King ſhulde ſodẽly aſſaile him.
